Effects of far-infrared ray on reproduction, growth, behaviour and some physiological parameters in mice.

The effects of chronic exposure to far-infrared ray (FIR) on reproduction, growth, behaviour, survival time and some related parameters were examined in SHN mice. The reproductive parameters differed slightly between the females on the normal racks and those on the FIR racks, which emitted FIR from the ceiling. The age and body weight on the day of vaginal opening was lower in the experimental mice born and maintained on the FIR rack than in the control on the normal rack. In both sexes, the levels of urinary components in the experimental group was significantly higher than the control at 6-7 months of age. Spontaneous motor activity of females during the light and dark phases were higher and lower, respectively, in the experimental group than the control. The survival rate was significantly higher in the experimental group than the control. These findings suggest that FIR has 'normalization effects' on the organisms.

Food restriction and spontaneous motor activity in male mice: effects of feeding pattern, far-infrared ray and bamboo grass leaf extract.

The effects on spontaneous motor activity of the pattern of restricted feeding, far-infrared ray (FIR) irradiation or free access in drinking water containing Sasa Health, a bamboo grass leafextract, were examined in SHN male mice at 2-3 months of age. In mice whose diet was restricted to 60% of the control, fed at 9:00 or 17:00 hours, the level of spontaneous behaviour was elevated 1 hour before the respective feeding time (8:00 or 16:00 hours). The activity was stimulated by FIR in both the control and food-restricted mice, but to a much higher degree in the latter. Treatment with Sasa Health in drinking water lowered the elevated activity level in food-restricted mice. Plasma component levels and organ weights were modulated by FIR or Sasa Health. The findings revealed that, not only the restricted feeding itsel, but also its pattern, significantly affected behaviour and that FIR and Sasa Health modified the deleterious effects of restricted feeding.

Inhibition by whole-body hyperthermia with far-infrared rays of the growth of spontaneous mammary tumours in mice.

To evaluate possible therapeutic benefits of irradiation with far-infrared rays (FIR) on breast cancer, we examined combined effects of the chronic exposure to FIR at ambient temperature (26.5-27.5 degrees C) and the whole-body hyperthermia induced by FIR (WBH) (35-41 degrees C) on the growth of spontaneous mammary tumours of mice. A high mammary tumour strain of SHN virgin mice born on the normal rack or FIR rack were maintained on the respective racks until mammary tumour appearance. When the mammary tumour size reached approximately 7 mm, some mice in each group received no further treatment (Control and FIR groups, respectively) and the remaining mice received 3 hours of WBH each of 5 consecutive days (C + WBH and FIR + WBH groups, respectively). There was little difference between the control and FIR groups in the tumour growth over 10 days of examination. On the other hand, the tumour growth was inhibited significantly in both C + WBH and FIR + WBH groups and the degree of inhibition was similar. The data confirmed that the chronic exposure to FIR at ambient temperature has little effect on the growth of spontaneous mammary tumours in mice. WBH with FIR, however, strongly inhibited the tumour growth without deleterious side-effects, while chronic FIR irradiation itself again had little effect in this process. This WBH regimen may serve as a useful animal model for long-term studies of a noninvasive treatment of breast cancer.

Study of passed stones by means of X-rays, infrared and thermal analyses.

X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and thermal analysis were used to study 108 stones that had been passed spontaneously from the upper urinary tract. The presence of apatite in pure calcium oxalate stones classified by x-ray diffraction was confirmed by infrared analysis of the ignited product. Consequently, 102 of 108 stones were found to be composed of weddellite and/or whewellite, and apatite. Besides the contents of weddellite, whewellite and apatite, the content of organic matrix also was estimated by thermal analysis in 102 stones, ranging from 1.1 to 17.2 per cent. The stones then were divided into 3 groups according to the principal constituent: 1) weddellite, 2) whewellite and 3) apatite. Weddellite stones were significantly heavier and significantly higher in apatite content than whewellite stones. It is suggested that weddellite calculi tend to become larger than whewellite stones. The apatite content was correlated with the ratio of weddellite to weddellite plus whewellite ( r equals 0.528), and the content of organic matrix was correlated with the whewellite content (r equals 0.708). Thus, it is considered that the weddellite-apatite and whewellite-organic matrix associations have important roles in the development and growth of weddellite and whewellite calculi, respectively.

Effects of hydroxyapatite in combination with far-infrared rays on spontaneous mammary tumorigenesis in SHN mice.

We have found that the administration of a diet containing 5% hydroxyapatite (HAP) derived from pig and cattle bones, and exposure to far-infrared rays (FIR) markedly inhibited spontaneous mammary tumorigenesis in SHN mice. Thus, the effect of combined treatment with HAP and FIR on mammary tumorigenesis was examined. The significant inhibition of tumor development by individual treatment with HAP or FIR was not enhanced by combined treatment; instead, the decrease in the inhibitory effect of HAP with age was ameliorated. Associated with this, life span was elongated and a decline in ovarian function was prevented by HAP plus FIR. Normal and preneoplastic growth of mammary glands and plasma component levels were not significantly affected by any treatment. The findings indicate that HAP and FIR have characteristics common to most natural products; in combination with other agents, they have little additive effect, when each is highly active.

Infrared ray electronic endoscopy combined with indocyanine green injection for detection of sentinel nodes of patients with gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: To avoid unnecessary lymphadenectomy in patients with cancer accurate diagnosis of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) is important. METHODS: This report examined the initial clinical use of infrared ray electronic endoscopy (IREE) combined with indocyanine green (ICG) injection for SLN detection in 84 patients with gastric cancer not invading the subserosa (75 T1 N0 M0 and nine T2 N0 M0 tumours, according to tumour node metastasis classification). RESULTS: There were no adverse events after injection of ICG. At least one SLN was detected in all but one patient by both ICG injection alone and by IREE with ICG. Eleven of the 84 patients had lymph node metastasis. SLNs detected by ICG injection alone did not include metastases in four of 11 patients, whereas IREE with ICG detected SLNs containing lymph node metastases in all 11 patients. Moreover, SLNs illuminated by IREE with ICG included all metastases among the 105 regional lymph nodes in the 11 patients; no metastatic lymph nodes were identified among 154 non-SLNs. CONCLUSION: IREE combined with ICG injection may efficiently detect SLNs that contain metastases in patients with gastric cancer.

Laparoscopic sentinel node mapping for colorectal cancer using infrared ray laparoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node (SN) mapping by dye injection on conventional laparoscopy (CL) is often precluded by the presence of mesenteric adipose tissue in patients with colorectal cancer. SN mapping on CL was compared with that on infrared ray laparoscopy (IRL) during laparoscopy-assisted colectomy (LAC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients with colorectal cancer who underwent LAC were enrolled. The tumor was identified by intra-operative fluoroscopy with marking clips. The tumor was stained intra-operatively by peritumoral injection of indocyanine green dye. SNs were observed by CL and by IRL. RESULTS: In all 48 patients, dye injection and tumor localization during LAC were successful. The identification of SNs on IRL was approximately five times better than that on CL. There were no false-negative cases in T1 and T2 disease by IRL. CONCLUSION: SN mapping on IRL is superior to that on CL. SN mapping by IRL might be feasible for T1 and T2 tumors.

Antibodies labeled with fluorescence-agent excitable by infrared rays.

Endoscopy is not significantly better than fiberoscopy for the diagnosis of minute cancers of the digestive tract. However, labeling of these lesions with an agent that can be detected videoendoscopically, with subsequent computer processing of the electronic signals, should facilitate endoscopic diagnosis of microlesions. We developed an antibody labeled with an indocyanine green(ICG) derivative that has a specific fluorescence emission at 807 nm upon excitation at 768 nm. The physiochemical characteristics of this labeled antibody resemble those of ICG. The activity of the antibody is suitable for immunohistochemical staining, and the antibody fluoresces under infrared ray excitation. This antibody should prove useful for performing vital immunostaining for infrared endoscopy.

Laparoscopic sentinel node navigation achieved by infrared ray electronic endoscopy system in patients with gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: The sentinel node (SN) concept has attracted considerable attention recently for the treatment of patients with early gastric cancer (EGC). This study evaluated the feasibility of laparoscopic SN navigation achieved by means of an infrared ray electronic endoscopy (IREE) system with indocyanine green (ICG) injection in patients with EGC. METHODS: Laparoscopic SN navigation was performed for 16 patients with preoperatively diagnosed EGC. After identification of SNs, routine laparoscopically assisted distal gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy was performed. Lymph nodes were examined histologically for metastasis by hematoxylin and eosin staining on one section of each node. RESULTS: One or more SNs and lymphatic basins were detected in all 16 patients. The average number of SNs detected was 2.9. Lymph node metastasis was found in 2 of the 16 patients (13%). In one of these two patients, lymph node metastasis was found in SNs. In the other patient, metastasis was found in a non-SN rather than a SN, but in the same lymphatic basin. The accuracy of this detection method was 94%, and there was one false-negative case. No adverse events occurred after injection of ICG. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic SN navigation by means of IREE combined with ICG injection is feasible for patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for EGC.
