There are differences in male and female height throughout the growth period. Utilising reference standard height charts we calculated the difference in male and female height as a function of age. A triphasic relationship was observed with statistically significant peaks (males greater than females) at 8 months and 18 years and (females greater than males) at 11.5 years of age. Data for sex hormone concentrations during this period were collected from the literature. Computing a difference measure (males minus females) for androgen levels a similar triphasic curve was obtained. Positive peaks occurred at 3 months and 18 years and a negative peak around 10 years. All three peak differences were found to be statistically significant. Peak differences in estrogen levels were observed at similar ages. Whereas peak differences in androgens were positively correlated with those for height, a negative correlation was found for estrogen. This implies that somatic growth is a secondary sex characteristic facilitated by androgens and inhibited by estrogens.

Measurements of the soft-tissue width and phalanx width of the index finger were made in 402 normal individuals (270 women and 132 men, age range 20--89 years) in order to establish age-sex characteristics. Men have a significantly larger total finger and phalanx width than women in all age groups. In both sexes a statistically significant increase with age in phalanx width and total finger width is found. The soft-tissue index and soft-tissue thickness is not influenced by age.

A genotypically female patient with 17 alpha-hydroxylase deficiency, and typical symptoms of hypertension, hypokalaemia and lack of secondary sex characteristics, is described. Plasma 17 alpha-hydroxycorticosteroid levels (cortisol, 11-deoxycortisol) and oestradiol were low. Those of 11-deoxycorticosterone, corticosterone, their 18-hydroxy- derivatives, ACTH and gonadotrophins were high and, with the exception of the gonadotrophins, suppressed to normal with dexamethasone which also corrected blood pressure (BP) and electrolyte abnormalities. Plasma aldosterone levels, initially suppressed, increased during treatment but, at 3 months, showed some signs of subnormal responsiveness. Possible reasons for this are discussed. The patient remains well after 9 years on dexamethasone and oestrogen therapy.

The change of fundamental voice frequency in continuous speech in female puberty was analysed in 47 girls by comparison of 2000 consecutive electroglottographic cycles in a reading situation. The results were compared with serum concentrations of androgens (dihydroepiandrosterone, delta-4-androstenedione, testosterone, and sex hormone binding globulin), oestrogens (oestradiol, oestrone, and oestronesulphate), and somatic puberty (weight, height, mamma stages, and pubic hair stages). Fundamental frequency in continuous speech was related only to oestrone r = -0.34, (P less than 0.05). But the tone range in continuous speech and the lowest tone in the phonetogram were found to be significantly correlated with many of the pubertal and hormone parameters. All these correlations could be explained by a common age-dependency. By multiple regression analysis different sets of variables for prediction of speaking fundamental frequency were found before and after menarche.
