Aquaticol, a bis-sesquiterpene and iridoid glucosides from Veronica anagallis-aquatica.

Aquaticol, an unusual bis-sesquiterpene was isolated from the medicinal plant Veronica anagallis-aquatica, in addition to 11 known compounds, aucubin, geniposidic acid, mussaenoside, catalposide, verproside, amphicoside, catalpol, boschnaloside, shanzhiside methyl ester, sitosterol and beta-stigmast-4-en-6 beta-ol-3-one. The structure of aquaticol was determined by spectroscopic means and by X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Phenylethanoid and iridoid glycosides from Veronica persica.

A new phenylethanoid glycoside, persicoside (1) and three known phenylethanoid glycosides, acteoside (2), isoacteoside (3) and lavandulifolioside (4) were isolated from the aerial parts of Veronica persica. On the basis of spectral analyses, the structure of the new compound was elucidated to be 3,4-dihydroxy-beta-phenylethoxy-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-4-O-caffeoyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside. Persicoside (1) and acteoside (2) exhibited radical scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Beside phenylethanoid glycosides, a hexitol, dulcitol (5) and seven known iridoid glucosides, aucubin (6), veronicoside (7), amphicoside (8), 6-O-veratroyl-catalpol (9), catalposide (10), verproside (11) and verminoside (12) were isolated.

The genome sequence of Veronica verna L., 1753 (Lamiales: Plantaginaceae).

We present a genome assembly of Veronica verna (Spring Speedwell; Streptophyta; Magnoliopsida; Lamiales; Plantaginaceae). The genome sequence has a total length of 463.88 megabases. Most of the assembly (98.85%) is scaffolded into 8 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial sequence has a length of 311.81 kilobases and the plastid genome assembly has a length of 149.82 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 22 903 protein-coding genes. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces reference genomes for eukaryotic species found in Britain and Ireland.

Nuatigenin-type steroidal saponins from Veronica fuhsii and V. muldtfida.

A new nuatigenin-type steroidal saponin, multifidoside (2), was isolated from the aerial parts of Veronica fuhsii and V multifida and its structure was identified as 3-O-([alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2glu)]-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4rha)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-->4glu)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]nuatigenin 26-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside. Additionally, a known steroidal saponoside, aculeatiside A (1), from V. fuhsii, a phenylethanoid glycoside, verpectoside A (3), and a flavon glycoside, isoscutellarein 7-O-(2"-O-6"-O-acetyl-beta-D-allopyranosyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside) (4) from V. multifida were isolated.

[Studies on chemical constituents of Veronica lina riifolia Pall. ex Link. sub. dilatata (Nakai et Kitagawa) Hong].

A new flavonoid glycoside, named linariifolioside, C29H32O17 with mp at 232-234 degrees C (dec.), was isolated from the alcohol extract of the dried whole herb of Veronica linariifolia Pall. ex Link sub. dilatata (Nakai et Kitagawa) Hong. Based on spactral (IR, UV, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and FAB-MS) analysis and hydrolysis products its structure was identified as luteolin-7-O-6"'-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucosyl-(1----2)-beta-D-glucoside (I). In addition, four known compounds, luteolin-7-O-beta-D-glucosyl-(1----2)-beta-D-glucoside (II), apigenin-7-O-alpha-L-rhamnoside (III), luteolin (IV), and apigenin (V) were isolated from the same fraction and identified. These compounds were obtained for the first time from this plant.

Screening of Veronica anthelmintica seed and Embella ribes fruit mixed in equal parts against gastrointestinal nematodes.

The antinematodal activity of a mixed prescription of Veronia anthelmintica seed (Kali zeeri) and Embelia ribes fruit (Babrang) was evaluated in goats. The EPG (Egg per gram) counts were made in the faeces before and on the 3rd, 10th and 15th days of the treatment with the powder in 0.5, 1 and 2 g/kg body weight doses and with the water and methanol extracts equivalent to 2 g/kg of the original powder. The evaluation of data on 15th day of the administration showed that 2 g/kg of powder, its equivalent amount of methanol extract and 0.01 g/kg of morantel tartrate are equally effective and safe in treating natural gastrointestinal nematode infection of the local goats.
