[Changes in superoxide dismutases and serum Zn, Cu in senile patients with yang deficiency].

This article reports on the respective determinations, which employ RIA and AAS, of superoxide dismutases (SOD-I) and serum Zn, Cu from 40 cases of senile patients with Yang deficiency. The results, which 994 +/- 125 ng/mg Hb, 63.6 +/- 12.1 micrograms%, 72.6 +/- 10.7 micrograms% respectively, were all significantly lower than the normal subjects and senile subjects (P less than 0.01), and showed that serum Zn was positively interrelated with SOD-I (r = 0.34). Integrating SOD-I and the function of serum Zn, Cu in senile especially the relations between Zn, Cu and SOD-I, the authors have made a preliminary probe into the mechanism of senile Yang deficiency's occurrence.

[Glucocorticoid receptors on human peripheral mononuclear and polymorphonuclear leucocytes: changes in patients with yang-deficiency].

It was found that, in former works, the glucocorticoid receptors (GCR) on peripheral mixed leucocytes in patients with Yang-deficiency were decreased. In this work, the mixed leucocytes were further separated into mononuclear (MNL) and polymorphonuclear (PML) leucocytes, and GCR were determined in each part of leucocytes. GCR on MNL and PML in 6 Yang deficient patients were 3473 +/- 413 and 4433 +/- 651 sites/cell respectively, statistically significant from the normal control group (4462 +/- 962 and 5622 +/- 782 sites/cell respectively, P less than 0.05). GCR on MNL, PML and mixed leucocytes in 5 patients were determined simultaneously, and all lowered from the control group. The results were 3369 +/- 370, 4986 +/- 419 and 4524 +/- 852 sites/cell respectively, with the lowest GCR on MNL and highest on PML.

[Effects of Sichuan herba Epimedii on the concentration of plasma middle molecular substances and sulfhydryl group of "yang-deficiency" model animal].

The effects of tonifying the kidney and strengthening the "Yang" produced by the extracts of Chinese herbs Epimedium wushanense and E. pubescens were studied in this paper. The results showed that both two herbs could decrease the concentration of plasma middle molecular substances and increase the concentration of plasma sulfhydryl group of "Yang-deficiency" model mice, thus suggesting that the above-said tonifying and strengthening effects of Herba Epimedii may result from its effects on middle molecular substances and sulfhydryl group, so as to strengthen the body resistance and eliminate the invading pathogenic factors.

[Effects of osthol and total-coumarins from Cnidium monnieri on immunological function in kidney yang deficiency mice].

Mice were injected intraperitoneally with hydrocortisone acetate to replicate the animal model of Kidney Yang Deficiency (KYD). Osthol and total-coumarins (TCR) from the fruit of Cnidium monnieri were administered orally to model mice. The effects of osthol and TCR on the immunological function of the KYD mice were observed. The results showed that compare with those in normal mice, the percentage of phagocytosis and the index of macrophage phagocytosis, the level of serum hemolysin and the proliferation of lymphocytes lowered significantly (P < 0.01) in model mice. It was shown that administering osthol or TCR could notably (P < 0.01) prevent the above-mentioned lowering in model mice, revealing that osthol and TCR could improve the immunological function of KYD mice.

[Effect on anti-aging and treating yang deficiency of kidney with huanshao dan capsules. A clinical report of 309 cases].

In this study, with various dosages of huanshao dan capsules, an old Chinese medicine formula, the authors treated the patients with Yang-deficiency of kidney for 1.5-3 months and compared the effects of huanshao dan with those of watered pills and placebo. The analyses of Ridit's showed not only the scores of symptoms of the great-dose huanshao dan group (group 2), the great-dose watered pill group (group 3), the small-dose watered pill group (group 4) and but even the short-treating course group (group 5) were remarkably improved after treatment (P less than 0.001, P less than 0.01); but the group 6 have not any difference after treatment. However, the functions of liver and kidney, the level of cholesterol, the concentration of blood sugar, blood pressure and heart rate remained the same after treatment. The scores of the ability of prompt memory as well as serum lipid peroxide, serum adrenocortical hormone, cellular immunological function, index of glycoprotein and T3, T4 had similar changes. Our data suggested that both huanshao dan and watered pills were beneficial for anti-aging process and there was no noticeable difference between the two drugs.

[Clinical study of bugu shengsui capsule in treating primary osteoporosis with kidney-yang deficiency syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of Bugu Shengsui capsule (BGSSC) in treating primary osteoporosis. METHODS: Using double energy X-ray bone densimeter and radioimmunoassay (RIA), the effect of BGSSC in treating primary osteoporosis (OP) with Kidney-Yang Deficiency syndrome. RESULTS: The clinical markedly effective and total effective rates of BGSSC were 46% and 82%, respectively. The rate of TCM group is significantly higher than that of the control group (Vitamin D plus calcium). BGSSC could improve bone mineral density by the verification of double energy X-ray bone dansity (DEXA). It could also increase the level of serum calcitonin, luteinizing hormone and calcium, decrease the activity of parathyroid hormone. CONCLUSIONS: The effects of BGSSC on primary OP included increasing patient's bone mineral density, depressing bone resorption and decreasing bone loss.

[Regulatory effect of Wenyang Whengling Decoction on Smads expressions in testis of sterile rats with Shen-yang deficiency].

OBJECTIVE: To study the localization and distribution of expressions of Smads (mother against dpp), the intracellular signal transduction molecules in the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) family, in the testis of male sterile rats with Shen-yang deficiency induced by adenine and to observe the effect of Wenyang Shengjing Decoction (WSD) on these expressions. METHODS: Rats were randomly divided into the control group, the model group and the WSD group. Localization and distribution of Smad 1, Smad 2 and Smad 4 expressions were detected by immunohistochemistry SABC and semi-quantitative RT-PCR and analyzed statistically by image analysis system; the contents of testosterone (T), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were detected by radioimmunoassay; and the weights of body, testis and epididymis, as well as sperm number of rats were also measured. RESULTS: Smad 1 and Smad 2 were expressed in cytoplasm of all levels of spermatogenic cells in rats' testis with their positive immuno-responsive substance locating in the cytoplasm, and positive Smad 2 expression could also be found in cytoplasm of Sertoli's cell, but both of them showed negative response in Leydig's cell; Smad 4 was positively expressed in cytoplasm of Leydig's cell but showed negative response in spermatogenic cell and Sertoli's cell. Compared with the normal control, Smad 1 expression was lower (P < 0.05), but Smad 2 and Smad 4 were higher in the model group (both P < 0.05), these abnormal changes could be reversed by WSD treatment (all P < 0.05). Compared with the normal control group, the body weight, sperm number and serum T level were lower, and levels of FSH and LH were higher (all P < 0.05) in the model group, which could all be improved by WSD (P < 0.05); the weights of testis and epididymis were unchanged in all groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: WSD could not only increase the sperm number through elevating serum T level and decreasing the levels of FSH and LH, but also by way of regulating Smads genes expression to adjust the levels of sex hormones, promote the production of sperm directly or indirectly, so as to treat male infertility.

[Genetic characteristics in yang deficiency patients].

With regard to genetic aspects, the authors determined the HLA typing in 50 cases of Yang deficiency (YD) syndrome and 230 healthy controls. Rohrer index and costae arcuarial angle were also measured in 50 cases of YD syndrome and 60 healthy controls. The results showed that the distributional frequencies of HLA-B5 (P less than 0.05), CW3 (P less than 0.01) and A9 (P less than 0.05) in YD were significantly lower than those in normal controls. It reflected the genetic characteristics of YD syndrome indirectly. The YD patients had higher Rohrer index (more than 1.50) than normal controls. The costae arcuarial angle of YD group was 80 +/- 14.35 degree (mean +/- SD), and that of normal controls was 69.5 +/- 11.83 degree. These indicated that fattiness was more often seen in the YD group.

[Effect of fushen decoction on thyroid hormone in chronic glomerulonephritis of both spleen and kidney-yang deficiency patients].

Changes of thyroid hormone level before and after treatment in 45 patients with chronic glomerulo-nephritis were observed. Of which, 23 cases were treated with Fushen Decoction and the other with Shenyan Siwei tablet as control. The results showed: (1) The level of serum T3 and T4 of 45 patients were significantly reduced (P < 0.001-0.01). (2) The level of serum T3 and T4 were significantly negative correlated with the value of BUN and Scr and the score of both Spleen and Kidney-Yang Deficiency Syndrome (P < 0.01-0.05), but there existed no significant negative correlation with urinary protein excretion in 24 hours (P > 0.05). (3) After treatment with Fushen Decoction, the level of serum T3 and T4 significantly increased (P < 0.01-0.05), but no significant change was recorded in control group (P > 0.05). (4) Although the level of serum T3 and T4 were raised, they were still lower than those of normal people.
