This paper outlines an innovatory approach to curriculum evaluation in one of the six colleges of nursing that developed an English National Board (ENB) pilot scheme in nurse education (ENB 1987a). The method of evaluation is promoted as a means of facilitating a working partnership between student and teacher in which they can share in the dynamic process of systematic monitoring and reviewing of learning programmes to ensure changing needs are met. It is envisaged the strategy would interest planners or implementers of health care courses who seek a deeper insight into the perceptions and values their learners hold.
Our recent descriptive report in this journal of "Healthometer", an interactive instrument for self-mediated health counseling, was well received in the medical systems research and development community. Suitable for paper as well as electronic mediation and covering both screening, processing/storage, and advisory tasks in a positively reinforcing and confidential way, it has on the whole been considered to be an interesting model in the advancing "information society technologies" perspective; however, a closer scientific and operative evaluation is warranted. Because the power of the instrument in addition to the hardware is critically dependent upon the wet- and software quality, the present study aims at examining in the same forefront forum some basic aspects of all these modalities, with emphasis on face and content validity, feasibility, and users' attitudes and opinions. It can be summarized, quite briefly, that all of them were satisfactory.
Combining opinion from expert panels is becoming a more common method of selecting criteria to define quality of health care. The Rand Corporation pioneered this method is the 1950s and 1960s in the context of forecasting technological events. Since then, numerous organizations have adopted the methodology to develop local and national policy. In the context of quality of care, opinion is typically elicited from a sample of experts regarding the appropriateness or importance of a medical treatment for several well-defined clinical cohorts. The information from the experts is then combined in order to create a standard or performance measure of care. This article describes how to use the panel process to elicit information from diverse panels of experts. Methods are demonstrated using the data from five distinct panels convened as part of the Harvard Q-SPAN-CD study, a nationally-funded project whose goal is to identify a set of cardiovascular-related performance measures.

Research has been an integral component of the mission of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses. Operationalization of this component of the mission has included a national research committee, funding of research grants, offering of educational sessions that highlight research methodology as well as research findings, and the formalization of a research editor position within Orthopaedic Nursing. The National Center for Nursing Research has recognized that the individual specialty nursing organizations have a role to play in determining priorities for that specialty. Consequently, NAON has been queried as to its research emphasis. This article presents the study conducted by NAON's Research Committee to determine research priorities within orthopaedic nursing.
