[Individual migratory behavior in France].

Trends in internal migration in France are analyzed over the course of an individual's lifetime using data from a 1981 INED survey entitled Triple Biographie. "The behaviour of individuals in terms of distance and degree of mobility is influenced by the distinctive characteristics of territory and consequently related to their regional origins. Another important factor is the process of urbanisation under way and the evolution of the urban network over the past fifty years." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[Population movement within small areas].

Internal migration trends in Hungary between 1962 and 1982 are analyzed. The socioeconomic causes and consequences of migration are first reviewed. Changes in the distribution of migration among counties over time are then examined. "In order to measure these changes, four-dimensional row vectors, based on standardized data, are elaborated and used for demonstrating the structure of movement. Finally, an attempt is made to forecast the movement of the population, based on the structure described in this way." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND RUS)

[High number of removals within the Netherlands in 1994].

"The number of persons moving home within the Netherlands increased from 1.629 million in 1993 to 1.684 million in 1994. Compared with 1987, the highest point of the eighties, the 1994 level was 1% higher. During 1994, 788 thousand persons changed address in family context, whereas 896 thousand persons moved individually. The moving families counted on average 2.94 persons. For five provinces internal migration in the period 1990-1994 resulted in net arrivals of which Felvoland had the highest surplus (33.9 thousand). The other provinces showed net departures, [ranging] from 1,800 for Overjissel to 24,300 for Zuid Holland." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Why Sydney keeps growing--trends in population distribution in New South Wales, 1991 to 1996.

"The release of population estimates based on the 1996 [Australian] Census showed a surprising result for New South Wales--Sydney's share of the State's population increased, reversing the trend of the late 1980s.... This paper uses unpublished internal migration data from the 1996 Census to explore the factors underlying this increased concentration of population in Sydney."

Spatial population mobility in Poland, 1952-1985.

This is a summary of the author's 1989 study on internal migration in Poland from 1952 to 1985. "The main aims of the study are: to describe spatial patterns of different types of migration vis-a-vis national socioeconomic change on the basis of the available unified statistical material...; to identify changes in the intensity and range (distance) of those movements; [and] to propose a hierarchical regionalization of permanent migration based on inter-voivodship flows, using the Slater method, as well as to identify the stage by the process of modernization of spatial mobility which has been reached in Poland." Data are primarily from official sources, including censuses and the current population register.

[Commuting versus moving? Choice and stability in place of residence versus place of work].

"The development of internal migration in the Federal Republic of Germany during the last few decades shows that commuting is becoming more and more a substitute for moves over long distances.... This paper tries to explain this 'mobility transition' by means of a model of individual choice between commuting and moving. The model is also able to account for changes in structural components. The decision-model is empirically tested by using methods of event history analysis with the data of the Socio-Economic Panel." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Jews on the move: implications for American Jewry and for local communities.

"Internal migration has most likely become the major dynamic responsible for the growth or decline of many Jewish communities and for the redistribution of the American-Jewish population across the United States in a pattern quite different from that characterizing American Jewry earlier in the century.... The analysis which follows will be restricted to an assessment of migration into the State of Rhode Island.... This paper begins with an overall description of the migration patterns of the population, set against some background information on migration to Rhode Island generally. Following this, attention will focus on how the migrants to the State, classified by duration of residence, differ from non-migrants with respect to socio-economic characteristics. Finally, migrants and non-migrants will be compared on selected behavioural indicators designed to measure integration into the religious and social life of the community."

International labor migration in the Middle East: a review of literature and research, 1974-84.

"This article reviews the main trends in the literature and research on international labor migration in the Middle East over the period 1974-84. This literature, which is characterized as descriptive and judgemental, falls into three broad categories: first, international and national overviews of migration trends, remittance flows and their macro-economic impact; second, descriptions of government policies designed to organize and regulate labor migration; third, at the community and household scale, comparative studies of migrant and non-migrant behavior in labor-sending countries."

Studies on the stereoselective internal acyl migration of ketoprofen glucuronides using 13C labeling and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Internal acyl migration reactions of drug 1beta-O-acyl glucuronides are of interest because of their possible role in covalent binding to serum proteins and consequent allergic reactions as well as their influence on drug disposition. An approach using 13C labeling and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been used to investigate in situ the kinetics of acyl migration and hydrolysis of 1beta-O-acyl glucuronides of enantiomeric ketoprofens (KPs) in phosphate buffer solutions at 37 degrees C. Apparent first-order degradation of the 1beta-O-acyl glucuronide labeled in the ester carbonyl carbon and the sequential appearance of 2-, 3-, and 4-O-acyl isomers as both alpha- and beta-anomeric forms were observed for each enantiomer. All of the positional isomers and anomers were characterized using two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy (heteronuclear multiple bond correlation, correlated spectroscopy, totally correlated spectroscopy) of the reaction mixtures. The overall degradation rate constants (hr-1) of (R)- and (S)-KP glucuronides were 1.07 +/- 0.154 and 0.55 +/- 0.034, respectively. To evaluate in detail the stereoselective reactivity, a kinetic model describing the rearrangement reactions was constructed, and the kinetics were simulated using a theoretical approach. Only the acyl migration, 1beta-->2beta, was found to have significant stereoselectivity. The rate constants (hr-1) for 1beta-->2beta migration of (R)- and (S)-KP glucuronides were 1.04 +/- 0.158 and 0. 52 +/- 0.029, respectively. The results may suggest that (R)-KP glucuronide could be more susceptible to covalent binding to proteins via acyl migration than the corresponding antipode. This stereoselective reactivity may be responsible for the stereoselective pharmacokinetics of KP. The direct approach using 13C labeling and NMR spectroscopy could also provide insight into the reactivities of other labile drug acyl glucuronides and their isomeric glucuronides.

The dynamics of mass migration.

We specify a set of equations defining a dynamic model of international migration and estimate its parameters by using data specially collected in Mexico. We then used it to project the a hypothetical Mexican community population forward in time. Beginning with a stable population of 10,000 people, we project ahead 50 years under three different assumptions: no international migration; constant probabilities of in- and out-migration, and dynamic schedules of out- and in-migration that change as migratory experience accumulates. This exercise represents an attempt to model the self-feeding character of international migration noted by prior observers and theorists. Our model quantifies the mechanisms of cumulative causation predicted by social capital theory and illustrates the shortcomings of standard projection methodologies. The failure to model dynamically changing migration schedules yields a 5% overstatement of the projected size of the Mexican population after 50 years, an 11% understatement of the total number of U.S. migrants, a 15% understatement of the prevalence of U.S. migratory experience in the Mexican population, and an 85% understatement of the size of the Mexican population living in the United States.

NMR spectroscopic and theoretical chemistry studies on the internal acyl migration reactions of the 1-O-acyl-beta-D-glucopyranuronate conjugates of 2-, 3-, and 4-(trifluoromethyl) benzoic acids.

High resolution 19F NMR spectroscopy has been used to investigate the kinetics of internal acyl migration and hydrolysis of the synthetic beta -1-O-acyl-D-glucopyranuronates of 2-, 3-, and 4-(trifluoromethyl) benzoic acids (TFMBAs) in phosphate buffer solutions at 30 degrees C as models of drug ester glucuronides. Apparent first-order degradation of the 1-O-acyl glucuronide and the sequential appearance of 2-, 3-, and 4-O-acyl isomers as both alpha- and beta-anomeric forms were observed for each TFMBA isomer. The overall degradation rate constants of the 2-, 3-, and 4-TFMBA 1-O-acyl isomers were 0.065 h-1, 0.25 h-1, and 0.52 h-1. In order to probe the reasons for these differences in reactivity, theoretical structural and electronic parameters for the beta-anomers of the 1-O-acyl glucuronides, their beta-2-O-acyl isomers, and both structures of the postulated ortho-acid ester intermediate were computed using semiempirical molecular orbital (AM1 and PM3) methods. The distinction between the slowly reacting 2-TFMBA glucuronide and the much faster reacting 3- and 4-TFMBA glucuronides could be observed by calculation of the relative bond order of the C-O bonds in the ortho-acid ester intermediates. The slow internal acyl migration rate of the 2-TFMBA isomer was also partly attributed to the high degree of steric hindrance of the trifluoromethyl group obstructing attack by the glucuronic acid 2-hydroxy group on the carbonyl carbon to form the ortho-acid ester intermediate. Some calculated molecular orbital properties, namely, dipole moment, energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), LUMO density, and nucleophilic frontier density on the carbonyl carbon, were also shown to be related to the measured half-lives. This work gives insight into the molecular physicochemical properties that influence the acyl migration kinetics of simple model drug glucuronides and is of potential importance in understanding more complex drug glucuronide acyl migration reactions of toxicological interest.

Trends of mobility and flows of spatial moves of population in postwar Japan.

This paper describes "the trends of mobility and flows of not only the internal migration of population but also the commutation of population between the place of residence and the place of work or school...for the postwar period until the early 1990s, using chiefly the statistics from the national population censuses and the basic resident registers. The main discussions are made not only upon the changes in the patterns of migratory flows between metropolitan and non-metropolitan regions or within a metropolitan region in internal migration, but also upon the association between internal migration and commutation of population within a metropolitan region, in particular, within Tokyo metropolitan region." Population forecasting with endogenous migration: an application to trans-Tasman migration.

"This article focuses on forecasting migration between Australia and New Zealand (trans-Tasman migration), which is largely visa-free and therefore resembles internal migration. Net trans-Tasman migration is a major component of New Zealand population change and is embedded in this article in a Bayesian or unrestricted vector autoregression (VAR) model, which includes foreign and domestic economic variables. When time series of net migration are available, this approach provides a useful input into forecasting population growth in the short run in the absence of major policy changes. This conclusion applies equally to interregional migration and to unrestricted international migration between economically integrated nations."

International contract migration and the reintegration of return migrants: the experience of Sri Lanka.

"This article attempts to shed light on the issue of how far the labor exporting countries can monitor the process of reinsertion of return migrants in the domestic economy, with a view to maximizing net gains from international labor migration, drawing upon the experience of Sri Lanka. It begins with an examination of the socioeconomic characteristics of migrant workers with special emphasis on their post-migration activity status and the pattern of remittance utilization. Then it proceeds to evaluate critically the self-employment scheme that has been introduced by the Sri Lankan labor administration to advise and train return migrants in establishing themselves in business. The findings point to the danger of expecting too much from policy initiatives in this sphere."

The causes of international labor migrations--a demand-determined approach.

The author first studies the reasons why people migrate using a neoclassical approach concerning income differentials. He tests this approach empirically and demonstrates its limits. A demand-determination approach based on human capital theory is then outlined to overcome these limits and to take into account restrictive immigration controls. Migration from Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Turkey to the European Community destination countries is examined. It is concluded that "the demand for immigrants in the destination country is the decisive condition for the phenomenon of international labor migration, and the supply of migration-willing workers is only a necessary condition."
