[Software and hardware for computer equipment designed for psychophysiological examination].

Principles of designing software and hardware for new computer equipment for psychophysiological examination were elaborated on the basis of theoretical prerequisites and of analysis of the use of equipment manufactured serially for quantitation of indices of the human higher nervous activity (HNA). The hierarchic structuring of software and hardware enabled, through unification of solutions, the development of new modifications of two equipment sets: computer-based unit "Psihomat" KPFK-99 for psychophysiological examination and computer-based unit "STABILOTEST" ST-01 for the evaluation of the central nervous system by the stability parameters in maintaining the vertical posture. The units have new improved functional features and provide the users with new computer technologies for dealing with research and practical tasks related with examination of human HNA parameters in health and pathology.

Rapid prototyping of interactive software for automated instrumentation in rehabilitative therapy.

Rapid prototyping is a quick, efficient way to evaluate new electrical instruments. A hardware interface between a computer and an instrument can be simulated in software. The authors demonstrate the technique of rapid prototyping by developing interfaces for two therapeutic strength-testing devices and an electromagnetic tracker/digitizer. The LabVIEW rapid prototyping software tool was used to create "virtual instruments," which combine to form interfaces. The functions and connections of each virtual instrument are described.

Microcomputers and database software for monitoring quality assurance activities.

A description of how one community hospital implemented a successful quality assurance program in radiology with the use of a personal computer and relational database management software is presented. The system has been well received and is easy to use and maintain. There are aspects of quality assurance beyond the double-reading method that are not addressed by this system. However, as we learn more about different quality assurance programs, the system has the capacity to evolve. The advertising literature is flooded with information about software packages that claim to meet all Joint Commission quality assurance requirements. Therefore, it is prudent to avoid making hasty purchasing decisions to accomplish a quick-fix solution to managing quality assurance activities. The Joint Commission recommends a systematic approach to defining needs and evaluating vendor products or services.

A software package for event related potential experiments.

All too frequently, researchers find that experimental designs are dictated by procedures implemented by the available equipment rather than by the questions to be answered. Event related potential experiments are limited by equipment which restricts the type and number of stimuli which can be presented and the length, number, and type of averages which can be computed. A software package was developed for event related potential experiments which provides a high degree of flexibility in designing the stimulus presentation protocol and the averages which can be computed. The package includes a set of user friendly programs for constructing complicated stimulus presentation sequences. In order not to restrict the researcher to a set of predetermined averages computed at the time the experiment is conducted, the EEG data is digitized and stored continuously without regard to times of stimulus presentation. Averages are computed from the continuous EEG data by a separate averaging program which takes as input a table of starting times of the segments to be averaged. The software package is currently in use at Dr. Rohrbaugh's laboratory for a series of complicated event related potential experiments.

CAE software for the noninvasive diagnosis method on the atherosclerosis by ultrasonic Doppler effect.

Previously, we developed the noninvasive estimation method on the viscoelastic deterioration of the blood vessel and related materials by using Ultrasonic Doppler Effect Sensor and we presented its theoretical foundation. Furthermore, we applied this method to discriminate the human blood vessels with atherosclerosis from normal blood vessels, as the viscoelastic deterioration under in vitro condition and proposed the algorithm for its diagnosis. In the present paper, we propose the software for personal computer (AORTA) for clinical diagnosis on the atherosclerosis within a few minutes by using Ultrasonic Doppler Effect Sensor based on this algorithm. Using this software, we clinically applied this method to patients with atherosclerosis and normal people. It enables us to discriminate the atherosclerotic blood vessels from those of the normal blood vessel within several minutes. By using this system, it is found that the normal human blood vessel has elastic property. When the blood vessel becomes atherosclerotic, it deteriorates in elasticity and shows the viscoelastic property. This system evaluates noninvasively the viscoelastic property of the blood vessel and the degree of the atherosclerosis.

HL7 with CORBA and OLE: software components for healthcare.

Componentized software promises easier, more fine-grained integration of disparate software systems. Variations of the technology can help to achieve tight coupling among disparate programs on the clinical workstation or across wide area networks. HL7 members have been designing extensions to the protocol for the exchange of healthcare information using Microsoft OLE and CORBA technologies. Extensive prototyping has been performed, including the simultaneous interconnection of sixteen different vendor systems exchanging demographic data and lab results. The first release of this standard will be notable in that the specifications for OLE and CORBA will be entirely isomorphic, they will be based directly, on HL7 version 2.3, and they may easily be implemented in systems that are not written using object-oriented programming tools. As HL7 version 3 is developed on an object-oriented model of healthcare information, the same approach will be used so information about the objects may be shared using CORBA and OLE.

[The millenium switch on 01 January 2000--a foreseeable crash for gynecologic and obstetrical software applications?].

The switch to the new millennium causes greater difficulties in computing concerning hard- and software. It is not foreseeable how much each computer will be hit by that. Due to the common use of computers in all parts of medicine the possible crash of data banks and networks across hospitals could afflict the regular care of patients in wards and outpatient clinics. The ability of each computer to go to the new millennium can be checked by simply performed tests or by highly specialized programmes as well. As many mistakes occur in co-operation of hardware and software, it is hard to fix the system. To continue the use of a data bank it is necessary to change the data bank's date format and all applications at the same time. Programmers and providers offer their advice via internet.

Slide presentation graphics using a personal computer. A comparative evaluation of available software.

Most of the available methods for preparing professional slides to be used in oral presentations can be cumbersome, time-consuming, and expensive. Creating high-quality 35-mm slides may require the use of expensive medical illustrators and photographic equipment not available to all physicians. More recently, technology has emerged that permits professional in-office generation of quality slides using commercially available computer graphics software and film recorders. Such a system is simple to establish and maintain when compared with commercial slide production facilities. We will review the hardware requirements of such a system, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of several commercially available software packages. Using a personal computer-based slide-making system, any physician communicating with small or large groups of people can now produce professional-looking slides easily, rapidly, and inexpensively.

Cluster: a software system for epidemiologic cluster analysis.

A software package for cluster analysis was developed that incorporates 12 methods to analyse residence and time data, and morbidity or mortality rates. The Knox, Barton, Chen and Ohno methods of the software are illustrated with data for 123 cancer cases reported by a citizen requesting a cluster investigation. Longitude and latitude for each address were assigned by a geographic information system for analyses with the Barton (p > 0.05) and Knox methods (p > 0.05). The data were also analysed for time of the event with the Chen method, comparing the observed incidence to expected county disease rates (p = 0.61), and for temporal patterns within the geographically defined population with the Ohno method (p >0.05). It was concluded that no statistically significant disease cluster existed.

Software tools for analysis and visualization of fMRI data.

The tools needed for analysis and visualization of three-dimensional human brain functional magnetic resonance image results are outlined, covering the processing categories of data storage, interactive vs batch mode operations, visualization, spatial normalization (Talairach coordinates, etc.), analysis of functional activation, integration of multiple datasets, and interface standards. One freely available software package is described in some detail. The features and scope that a generally useful and extensible fMRI toolset should have are contrasted with what is available today. The article ends with a discussion of how the fMRI research community can cooperate to create standards and develop software that meets the community's needs.

Quality of assurance considerations for use of the Fluorlmager SI and fragmeNT analysis software.

The Fluorlmager SI (FSI) from Molecular Dynamics is one of several scanning instruments available for the detection of fluorescent emissions associated with DNA samples in a variety of matrices (agarose and polyacrylamide gels, membranes and microplates). In our laboratory, we measured the electrophoretic mobility of randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fragments stained with ethidium bromide in agarose using the FSI to scan gels and the associated Molecular Dynamics software (ImageQuaNT, and FragmeNT Analysis) for analysis. Initial scans and analyses resulted in inconsistent band detection across the same gel and across several scans of the same gel. To determine the best types of calibration for the instrument, several factors were considered and then evaluated. Tests of calibration acceptability were also evaluated. Band detection by FragmeNT Analysis was improved following optimization of matrices and parameters used in calibration and experimental scans. In addition, use of software templates for analysis and modifications in the staining procedure, which have resulted in decreased instrument associated variance, are discussed.

Data management in a two-dimensional gel electrophoresis laboratory: "gelscript 1" software.

We have developed a software package "gelscript 1", to perform data operations in a laboratory that runs and analyzes a large number of two-dimensional (2-D) gels. This system is managed automatically by the "4th Dimension" relational database on a Macintosh platform. A guiding principle in the development of "gelscript 1" was that any piece of information is entered into the system only once, and is retrieved, copied, inserted or checked whenever required. In addition to saving labor, this principle ensures consistency and integrity of the database. The system always "knows" how many gels were run from any one sample, how long the films were exposed or were supposed to be exposed. It keeps track of data throughout all operations, warns of improper sample assignments, and prints labels for films, samples, protocols, etc. The software can be adapted to other applications, in which many samples are processed and where cross-referencing is needed.

A comparison of software packages that assess linkage using a variance components approach.

We report single-point and multipoint results from three statistical genetics software packages using a variance components approach for quantitative traits. When possible, we have shown the effects of covariates. Results from GENEHUNTER, SOLAR, and ACT software packages are compared for the quantitative trait immunoglobulin E (IgE) using chromosome 5 asthma familial data from Oxfordshire (England), Perth (Australia), and Freiburg (Germany), and using the genome-wide German data. Although few differences among variance components results for GENEHUNTER, SOLAR, and ACT were detected on a limited region of chromosome 5, these packages showed larger disagreement in the German data for chromosomes 1, 9, and 14.
