The new In-Ceram Spinell system--a case report.

The final color of all-ceramic restorations is mainly dependent on the light-transmission characteristics of the different components of the ceramic material. This article is a report on the improvement in light reflection and light transmission possible with the new In-Ceram Spinell crown system, which provides a natural-looking appearance.

Marketing the cosmetic dental practice.

Marketing a cosmetic dental practice is a necessary element of patient education today. A professional relations coordinator is essential for developing integrated strategies that help patients understand the options available to them in cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry is an evolving field that can be difficult for patients to fully understand. Only through patient education and marketing will dentists be able to expand their practices to include cosmetic dentistry.

Full-mouth porcelain rehabilitation.

The understanding and development of cosmetic choreography as both an art and a science has enabled clinicians to restore structure and function to damaged dentitions while restoring aesthetic harmony to their patients' oral and facial appearance. This review presents a case of full-mouth, all-porcelain rehabilitation, embracing the interplay between diagnosis, treatment planning, material selection, and cosmetic choreography.

Use of the Empress all-ceramic restoration system.

New dental materials and techniques have been introduced in the past few years to fabricate aesthetic ceramic restorations with improved strength, biocompatibility, resistance to wear, and better fit. Aesthetic concerns and increasing demand for tooth-colored posterior restorations have led to a number of all-ceramic restorations such as IPS Empress (Ivoclar-Williams, Amherst, NY). The Empress system offers superior aesthetics and physical properties. New generation ceramics along with the current adhesive techniques have resulted in the ability to provide higher strength, therefore indicating crowns for posterior restorations as well. These materials are being used more frequently and in more extensive oral prosthetic rehabilitations such as the case that will be presented. We discuss the different properties and advantages of IPS Empress.

Teeth white and fair.

Most dentists practicing today, in fact most dentists living today, accept porcelain, in one form or another, as a fundamental determinant of dental armamentarium. It must be remembered, however, that porcelain, in spite of some admonishments by the Chicken Littles, has not and is not about to fall like the sky. A great amount of purpose, intellect, and dedication proffered by porcelain's protagonists was the springboard that eventually led to near total acceptance of that product by dentists and the public they treated. Porcelain's introduction, however, was not accompanied by a professional unity that orchestrated its arrival with a blare of bugles and a ruffle of drums. Rather, the early proponents and opponents churned and swiped at each other for some decades. Teeth White and Fair recounts the origin, struggle, and growth of an early porcelain manufacturing company; the diversity of the men involved in the production of porcelain; the profession's dichotomy regarding the acceptance of porcelain; and the details of manufacture of that then embryonic dental product. Finally, the reader is given a peek at evolving cosmetic oriented materials that desire to garner ascension as valued players on the stages of cosmetic dental restorative materials.

[What is beauty?].

The face is a most important part of our features because of the importance it plays in communication. This paper looks at a means of defining what is normal and also what is beautiful. The face is a three-dimensional object and therefore needs to be measured in three dimensions. This paper describes an optical surface scanning system which has been used to analyze the faces of 40 normal patients with a Class I occlusion and also the faces of 30 models from the No. 1 Agency in London. The scans of each group has been separated into males and females, and the faces averaged to give an average normal male face and an average normal female face, an average model male face and an average model female face. These faces have then been compared by a special registration programme which enables the observer to compare the faces in three dimensions and record the amount of difference between them. The value of the system in forensic science for the identification of profiles in photographs is also illustrated as is its use in the building up of the soft tissues over the skull. The importance of which parts of the face are genetically determined has also been looked at by special shape analysis programmes and these are described.

Restoring function with porcelain laminate veneers.

The ability of porcelain veneers to be conservative in dentistry has tremendous advantages for patients. Being less invasive with both the gingiva and pulp results in better gingival health, easier maintenance, and less postoperative sensitivity. The use of porcelain laminate veneers to reestablish function and enhance aesthetics results in minimally invasive restorations. The patient was very pleased with the results. With proper care, she will have many years of beauty and newly restored function.

Smile enhancement using indirect veneers.

The anterior 8 veneers provided the patient with a much improved appearance. She was more self confident and happy with her smile. It was great to see the immediate gratification cosmetic procedures can have on a people. It was also great to receive a sincere thanks for really making a difference.
