With the aid of a computerized system for content analysis, WORDS, the complete Schreber Memoirs was subjected to various multivariate reduction techniques in order to investigate the major content themes of this document. The findings included the prevalence of somatic concerns throughout the Memoirs, clear references to persecutory ideas and to Schreber's assumption of a redemptive role, complex encapsulated concerns about Schreber's relationship with God, a lack of any close relationship between sexuality and sexual transformation either to themes of castration or procreation, and the fact that neither sun, God, nor Flechsig was significantly associated with clusters concerning gender, sexuality, or castration. These findings are discussed in relation to psychodynamic interpretations furnished by prior investigators who employed different research methods.

Based on the importance of document files and first-hand bibliographic sources for studying the history, we have recently investigated the chapter of Doctoral Thesis and Reports on anesthetic topics since we believe that these are fundamental to gain insight into the knowledge of our history. This investigation was planned to find such documents by reviewing the data of several Spanish archives and libraries. We collected 80 works: 14 Reports and 66 Doctoral Theses performed during a period of 95 years (heuristic limits 1847-1942). These papers were classified in several subgroups according to the subjects they deal with: 21 works on inhalation anesthesia, 7 on intravenous general anesthesia, 20 on spinal anesthesia, 10 on locoregional, 7 on anesthesia and metabolism, 12 on obstetric anesthesia, and 3 works on varied anesthesia issues. Analysis of these documents revealed that the authors (physicians and Spanish medical corporations) undertook an accurate consideration of the more relevant scientific subjects at the time of their investigation. We conclude that the works analyzed in the present study represented the beginning of the Spanish investigation on anesthesia. Further investigations may contribute to enrich our historiography.
With this addition to the slender literature of self-revelations by psychoanalysts, the author also makes what may be his final contribution to psychoanalysis. An episode of hypomania during a visit to his birthplace, Vienna, triggered a dream whose elucidation allowed him to recover a primal scene and complete a self-analysis begun 65 years earlier. Shortly thereafter, a stroke left him hemiplegic and forced the author to confront the final stage of a productive life. After describing a range of adaptations to age and failing health, he explores the role hypomania played in his reconciling with the inevitability of impending death. Analysis of the contending forces also deepens our understanding of the transformations the creative process undergoes in advanced age, a topic the author leaves for younger hands to perfect.

A structured enquiry for assessing autobiographical memory is proposed. It is made up of three standardized time-cued sets of questions focusing on three life periods: adolescence, early and late adulthood, with five questions for each life period. Standardized testing procedure, checking for veracity and scoring methods are described. Normative data from 157 healthy individuals aged over 55 are converted into 'equivalent scores' for use with the enquiry and for diagnostic purposes. Education and ageing, but not sex, appear to be significant factors in the efficiency of retrieval from the autobiographic repertoire.

The autobiographies of 49 eminent psychologists were content analyzed in terms of autobiographically consequential experiences (ACEs). Most memories for ACE were not single episodes. Episodic ACEs did, however, share many characteristics of "flashbulb" and vivid memories elicited in studies using more traditional experimental procedures. Memories were concentrated during the college and early adult years. Thus, as in other autobiographical memory studies that have used older subjects, there was a pronounced reminiscence effect. These results were considered in light of Erikson's theory of adult personality development.
