[Regional differences in urbanization].

"Relying on population data of Hungary's town network, the authors review temporal and regional differences in urbanization. They trace back the data of 109 towns...[from] 1985 to the first official census of population, then they analyse by means of rank correlation the lags appearing in the concentration rate of urban population.... The authors think that urbanization of small towns might be the key element in the spatial and structural extension of urbanization. In the authors' opinion the lasting regional differences of urbanization determine also the centres of gravity of future development." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND RUS)

Urbanization patterns: European versus less developed countries.

This paper develops a model in which the interaction between transport costs, increasing returns to scale, and labor migration across sectors and regions creates a tendency for urban agglomeration. Demand from rural areas favors urban dispersion. European urbanization took place mainly in the 19th century, with higher costs of spatial interaction, weaker economies of scale, and a less-elastic supply of labor to the urban sector than in less developed countries (LDCs) today. These factors could help explain why primate cities dominate in LDCs, whereas a comparatively small share of urban population lives in Europe's largest cities.

Demographic processes of urbanisation in Delhi.

"Metropolitanisation has been observed by experts as one of the main characteristics of Indian urbanisation. Rural to urban migration has been a major player in urban growth of metropolitan cities, particularly Delhi. Not only Delhi but its hinterland [are] urbanising fast as compared to the hinterlands of other major cities of India. There are several processes of urbanization viz. historical, physical, demographic and economic. In this paper the role of demographic processes in urban expansion of Delhi [is examined]."

Settlement network development policy and urbanisation in Hungary in the 20th century.

"The paper brings out the role of political economy in influencing the process of urbanisation and [the] structure of settlement network. This is demonstrated through an empirical study of Hungary during the twentieth century. Three phases get easily distinguished: pre-1949 or the period of changes in the state boundaries; 1949-89 or the period of state socialism; and post-1989 or the period of institutional reform. An interesting finding is that there was a bias in favour of large cities and county seats in allocation of development funds under all the regimes."

Regional cities in Australia's changing urban system.

"There is evidence that Australia's urban system is changing. Since the mid-1970s there has been growth in the number and total population of regional cities. It is argued that this growth is a product of restructuring and the de-regulation of the Australian economy. Regional cities have become more prominent in the national economy as centres for manufacturing, as a consequence of the growth of tourism and recreation industries, through the decline in some areas of smaller urban settlements and as a result of new mining developments."
