[The lymphocyte transformation test and its relation to the duration of disease in patients with oral carcinomas (author's transl)].

Cell mediated immune reactions take an increasing part for the progress of malignant tumors besides numerous other factors. With support of the lymphocyte transformation test a significant difference was pointed out between orofacial tumors with long course and a control group of healthy persons by means of the interpretation of the PHA (phythemagglutinin)-stimulation. These results are to find indicated also in comparison of the antigen preparation with candidin in tumors with long course.

Effect of furosemide on the ionic composition of the arterial wall.

Furosemide decreased the intracellular H2O, Cl and K content and Cl concentration of dog carotid arteries incubated in normal or high K Krebs (123 mM). Cl loss exceeded K loss in normal Krebs but was of the same magnitude in high K Krebs. The findings are compatible with the inhibition of a neutral K-Cl coupled uptake.

[Comparison between combination therapy with clofibrate and beta-pyridylcarbinol and clofibrate monotherapy (author's transl].

In order to determine whether the lipid-lowering effect of combined treatment with clofibrate and beta-Pyridylcarbinol exceeds that of clofibrate monotherapy, a double-blind crossover study was performed. 17 patients with primary hyperlipoproteinemia of Type IIa and 10 patients with primary hyperlipoproteinemia of Type IIb received either Lipofacton (1.000 mg clofibrate and 50 mg beta-pyridylcarbinol per day) or clofibrate (1.500 mg per day) for a period of 6 weeks each. Before beginning therapy and between both periods of medication, placebo was administered for 14 days. In both total plasma and in the LDL fraction the cholesterol level was lowered by less than 10% for both substances. In patients with hyperlipoproteinemia of Type IIb, the triglyceride levels were lowered by about 40%.

Biochemical characterization of a red cell UMP kinase variant found in the Warao indians of Venezuela.

UMPK 3 is a rare variant of the polymorphic enzyme of human red cells, uridine monophosphate kinase. This homozygote phenotype was detected among the Warao Indians of Venezuela. The UMPK 1 and UMPK 3 enzymes were partially purified following the method described by Tend et al. (1976). The biochemical and kinetic parameters of both variants were studied in crude hemolysates and in partially purified enzymes. A comparison was made with the results previously reported by Teng for UMPK 1 and UMPK 2, and it was concluded that UMPK 3 seems to resemble the other two allelic gene products in Km values for UMP, CMP, and ATP but differs from them in electrophoretic mobility, pH optimum, and thermal stability.

Epidemiological study in Switzerland.

A study group of originally 623 employed women of Northwestern Switzerland who were aged 30 to 49 yr and showing objective evidence of intake of phenacetin-containing analgesics, and a control group of 621 comparable women showing no such intake, were examined in 1968 and followed-up five times from 1969 to 1975 for laboratory evidence of urorenal disorders. Mortality was higher in the study group, with 21 deaths, compared to the control group, with 5 deaths, and was higher than expected in a comparative population in Switzerland (P less than or equal to 0.05). In both study and control groups, morbidity was low. There was no difference between the study and control groups with respect to subsequent proteinuria and hematuria. The seven-year incidence of low urine specific gravity after overnight thirsting was higher in the study group than in the control group (2.9% vs. 1.0%), and the incidence of raised serum creatinine was also significantly higher in the study group (2.9% vs. 0%). However, when the study group was further subdivided into a subgroup showing evidence of high intake of phenacetin-containing analgesics and one showing low-intake, only the high-intake subgroup had an incidence of raised serum creatinine concentrations (5.3%), significantly higher than the control group (0%), whereas the low-intake subgroup had an incidence (0.4%) similar to the control group. Also the high-intake subgroup showed significantly higher rates of bacteriuria than the controls (P less than or equal to 0.004).

Radical formation in single crystals of hypoxanthine.HCl.H2O, inosine, and the disodium salt of 5'-inosine-monophosphate.

Radical formation in single crystals of hypoxanthine.HCl.H2O, inosine and Na2-5'-IMP.(7.5 H2O) by X-irradiation has been studied using electron-spin-resonance spectroscopy at 9.5 and 35 GHz. In all crystals both H-addition radicals at position C2 and C8 of the purine ring are found. The coupling constants of these two radicals are different and depend strongly on the protonation state of the base. INDO-calculations indicate that the C8-radical is protonated at O6. In Na2-5'-IMP OH-addition radicals at position C2 of the purine ring are formed. Electron adduct radicals are found in the neutral and the N7-protonated base after X-irradiation at 77 K. In Na2-5'-IMP no electron adduct is formed but a radical which probably is the cation. In hypoxanthine.HCl.H2O a radical could be observed after X-irradiation at 77 K, which results from addition of a Cl- to the nitrogen N1.

Genomic RNA of the murine coronavirus JHM.

Genomic RNA extracted from the purified murine coronavirus JHM sediments between 52S and 54S in aqueous sucrose gradients. The RNA is single-stranded and has an apparent mol. wt. of 5.4 to 6.5 X 10(6), as determined by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide agarose gels of different concentrations. The presence of polyadenylate sequences in the RNA is demonstrated by binding to oligo-)dT) cellulose and digestion with ribonucleases A and T1. The purified RNA does not dissociate into subunits at high temperatures or in high concentrations of DMSO and is infectious.

[Comparative studies of the oral flora in patients with cancer and precancerous lesions of the mouth mucosa].

Bacteriological smears were taken from various regions of the oral cavities of a total of 100 subjects (patients with carcinoma, non-specific ulcer or leucoplakia, and patients without pathological oral findings). The preparations were stained by the Gram procedure and differentiated according to germ count, morphology and ability to combine with dyes. Gram positive cocci prevailed in all groups. The total germ counts were greater in patients with carcinoma than in those with nonspecific ulcer and in normal subjects.

[Fetal damage due to mushroom poisoning with amanita phalloides during the first trimester of pregnancy (author's transl)].

A 25-year old para II suffered of mushroom poisoning by amanita phalloides at 9 weeks gestation. When the life threatening maternal illness was overcome a therapeutic abortion was carried out at 12 weeks gestation. Prostaglandin F2 alpha was injected retro-amniotically. The damage to the fetus by the toxins of amanita phalloides is described and discussed.

[The value of pneumocystography in diagnosis of breast tumours (author's transl)].

Pneumocystography was performed regularly in mammographically benign tumours. During 1974 and 1975 16892 breast were investigated radiographically of which 1031 had palpable tumours. In 614 cases the results of palpation correlated with radiography and indicated a cyst. These tumours were punctured with the aim of demonstrating the cyst wall by air filling and subsequent pneumocystography. This procedure enabled 4 out of 10 women (430 out of 1031) to avoid operation despite clinically palpable tumours. In 184 cases biopsy was necessary. In 12 cases the pneumocystogram showed tumours needing excision in addition to unremarkable cysts, in 11 cases the cyst walls showed radiological changes, 161 tumours were apparently solid. Since December 1975 we have started to aspirate breasts with radiographically suspected cysts in the absence of palpable tumour and to perform a pneumocystogram. This attempt was successful in all 19 cases. Removal of unremarkable cysts should not be accepted any longer. Prior to removal of a palpable tumour of the breast radiological investigated is indicated.

[Syndrom of hypercalcemia in a case of hyperthyroidism, primary hyperparathyroidism and cancer of the gall-bladder (author's transl)].

A hypercalcemia syndrom in the case of a 63 year old female patient is reported on, who simultaneously suffered from hyperthyroidism and suspected primary hyperparathyroidism. During autopsy an ectopic (ventral mediastinum) parathyroid adenoma and a gall bladder carcinoma were discovered. Each of these three diseases can induce hypercalcemia by themselves.

[Prophylaxis of peritoneal adhesions with streptokinase and streptodornase (Varidase). An experimental study in animals (author's transl)].

Animal experiments on 40 Wistar rats show that intraperitoneal application of Varidase can reduce or prevent the formation of adhesions after intra-abdominal interventions. This effect is interpreted as the sequel to a local increase in fibrinolytic activity which leads to the accelerated breakdown of fibrinous pseudo-membranes. The healing of intestinal sutures appears not to be impaired by Varidase.
