[The lymphocyte transformation test in squamous epithelial carcinomas of the orofacial region].

In the last years cell mediated immune reactions against the antigens of human carcinomas have obtained an increasing importance. With the lymphocyte transformation tests was found on the estimate of the PHA (phythemagglutinin)-stimulation a significant difference of the T-cell stimulation of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the orofacial region opposite to a comparison group of healthy patients.

[Single-view mammography (author's transl)].

Single-view mammography was performed in 12123 women (22321 pictures) so that the entire breast tissue was visualised. In 223 patients the results were compared with histological findings obtained subsequently. The high percentage of agreement indicates that the single-view examination is highly reliable.

[The change of physical properties of plastics (polyoxymethylenecopolymer, polyethyleneterephthalate, polyethylene, polytetrafluorethylene) after animal implantation and autoclavation (author's transl)].

The change of physical properties of plastics (polyoxymethylene-copolymer, polyethyleneterephthalate, polyethylene, polytetrafluorethylene) and the bio-compatibility of these materials were examined by implantation in the backmuscle of 6-month-old male rabbits for 4 and 12 weeks and after autoclavation. We have found out, that after implantation and autoclavation polyethylene-terephthalate demonstrates a strong diminution of the visco-elastic qualities. Polyethylene and polytetrafluorethylene were not changed by these treatments. After an implantation of 12 weeks and an autoclavation of four times the visco-elastic properties of polyoxymethylene-copolymer were only slightly diminished by 10 to 15%. The histological investigation of the surrounding tissue demonstrated a very good bio-compatibility of polyethylene. After an implantation of 4 weeks polyoxymethylene-copolymer, polyethyleneterephthalate and polytetrafluorethylene produced a comparable foreign body reaction, which, however, was evidently diminished after an implantation of 12 weeks.

[Results of radiotherapy of bronchial carcinoma (author's transl)].

In a joint retrospective study by 17 radiotherapy clinics in German-speaking countries the results of treatment of bronchial carcinoma after radiotherapy were analysed in 7503 cases. The age peak was between the 60th and 70th year. Squamous-cell carcinoma was the most frequent histological type, followed by anaplastic carcinoma, with adenocarcinoma being rare. There was a high proportion of histologically not clearly identified cases (27% in central and 35% in peripheral carcinomas). Survival rate at one year was 31% for central (3662 patients) and peripheral (961 patients) tumours, but only 2% at five years. Prognostically there was no difference between histological types and kind of radiotherapy or technique, but total dose affected survival rate. At a total dose of less than 5000 rd the survival rate at five years was minimal. The prognosis of combined surgical and radiotherapeutic measures was slightly better than with a radiotherapy alone, but results were unpredictable for the individual case. It is concluded that radiotherapy aiming at cure should be used in imoperable bronchial carcinoma if the tumour state and general condition of the patient appear to make a cure possible. But if this is not the case, radiotherapy should be used only palliatively, i.e. only to ameliorate symptoms.

[Biological availability of potassium from a sustained release preparation].

The bioavailability of potassium from a sustained-release KC1 preparation has been compared in 10 healthy volunteers with that of a non-sustained-release KC1 coated tablet by means of urinary elimination data. From the 40 mEq KC1 additionally administered, 35.2 mEq (88%) and 35.5 mEq (88.8%) respectively were eliminated by the kidneys. On the evidence of this elimination data the sustained-release potassium preparation showed the same bioavailability as the non-sustained-release KC1 tablets. The retard form was excellently tolerated.

Solubilization and molecular characterization of membrane-bound antigens shared by thymocytes and brain.

In order to characterize chemically the serologically well-defined antigens shared by thymocytes and nervous tissue of mice and rats, different solubilization procedures have been tested. Treatment of thymocyte membranes with urea-Nonidet-P40 (NP40) proved to be the most valuable method, since nearly 100% of the antigen was solubilized essentially without loss of the antigenicity. By gel filtration in urea-NP40 the molecular weight was estimated to be 35 000 and the Stokes radius in sodium deoxycholate 31.8 A. In gel filtration studies a homogenous peak was obtained, whereas isoelectric focusing yielded two peaks (isoelectric points pH 4.5-5.0 and pH 5.4). The three determinants of this antigenic system were inseparable in gel filtration and isoelectric focusing, supporting the view put forward on the basis of serological studies that they are part of the same molecule. Extraction of murine thymocyte membranes with organic solvents yielded a considerable loss of activity of the thymocyte-brain antigen. There was some residual activity in the protein fraction, but none in the organic phase. Correspondingly, the highly purified ganglioside G Gtet 2b proved unable to absorb any rabbit anti-CBA brain serum. The reduced antigenic activity of the delipidated protein fraction could be restored by addition of lipids, as well as the nonionic detergent NP40. These observations suggest that interaction of protein and lipid is necessary for the antigenicity of the thymocyte-brain antigen.

Radical formation in salts of pyrimidines III. Cytosine . H2O cyrstals.

The radicals produced by X-irradiation at 77 K and at 300 K in cytosine monohydrate crystals have been analysed by electron-spin-resonance (e.s.r.) spectroscopy. Three radicals have been identified at 77 K: the anion radical and the cation radical of the cytosine molecule, together with the radical resutling from H-abstraction from the nitrogen N1. Irradiation at 300 K produces radicals resulting from H-adition at three different positions of the cytosine molecule. These are the C5-addition radical, the C6-addition radical, and the O2-addition radical. The results are compared with those found previously by other authors.

Effect of human exogenous leukocyte interferon in cytomegalovirus infections.

Human leukocyte interferon was injected into nine patients with cytomegalovirus infections; four of these patients were congenitally infected, and five had acquired infections. In three patients viruria was completely inhibited. In five patients viral excretion in the urine was only transiently inhibited. Viremia was not significantly suppressed. The lymphocyte response to phytohemagglutinin was suppressed in two patients.

[Microcalcifications on the mammaogram, surgical clarification and histologic findings. Concerning the problem of the diagnosis of occult carcinoma of the breast (author's transl)].

Microcalcifications on the mammogram could be an important indication for an occult carcinoma. Up until 31 December 1976, we intentionally removed such grouped microcalcifications 218 times in a group of 17,523 examined females (32,245 mammographs). The selection was confirmed radiologically. The acquired material was then examined histologically via an complicated technique. We found 35 carcinomas and 89 proliferating mastopathies of which 34 required at least strict supervision and sometimes additional treatment. - With strict indications, one-third of the previously clarified cases revealed disorders requiring treatment. In over one-half of the cases, the films indicated nothing of a serious nature. It must, however, be noted that an existing cancer is not always discovered in spite of the intentional excision of microcalcifications. This only serves as an indirect indication.

[Quantitative determination of immunoglobulins in the saliva. Comparative studies in squamous cell carcinomas of the mouth mucosa].

Immunological processes have been increasingly gaining in importance in the development and proliferation of tumours inhuman. Quantitative determinations of immunoglobulins IgG and IgA in the saliva of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa showed a significant difference in IgG concentration as compared with patients affected with inflammatory intraoral diseases.

[Variations in the biological behavior of neoplasms of the oral mucosa].

Up to now the biological potencies of a carcinom of the oral mucous membrane cannot be determined metrically in individual cases. Based upon investigations of the frequency of metastase formation of oral carcinoms within regional lymphatic nodes one cannot draw reliable conclusions as to the dependence of regional metastase formation upon the T-stage. Therefore surgical treatment of regional lymphatic nodes is considered necessary also in early stages.

[Physical flow studies of new surgical aspiration drains].

Mathematical and experimental results demonstrate that the customary Redon drain as well as the improved Neo-Redovac drain develop suction only over a short initial distance. The above mentioned innovation of three additional oval holes does not increase efficiency. The disadvantage of rapidly diminished suction is overcome in the "Ulmer Drain", in which equidistant openings of continually increasing aperture are aligned towards the drain end.
