[Hemodialysis and urea kinetics. An elementary computational program].

An elementary computational program to optimize dialysis in children with chronic renal failure was developed. The program is based on the urea kinetics model. Parameters involved in the efficiency of hemodialysis such as time and clearance, hemofilter performance and body surface area, as well as nutritional needs of the child are considered in the program.

[Pulmonary infiltrates, eosinophilia and polyneuritis].

A case of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia which, during the evolution, developed a very rare motor-sensitive polyneuritis of the lower limbs, is presented. We comment on the results of the electromyography, the neuromuscular biopsy and show the differential diagnosis with other diseases with lung infiltrates, peripheric eosinophilia and polyneuritis, such as hypereosinophilic syndrome, allergic angiitis and granulomatosis of Churg and Strauss.

[Therapeutic aspects of functional pathology of edentulous patients with temporomandibular osteoarthritis].

We reviewed the fundamentals aspects for diagnosis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis and its treatment in edentulous patients with the following objectives: to eliminate the inflammatory process, to obtain neuromuscular mandible centricity and to decrease the traumatic effects in the TMJ. We used occlusal splints and dentures that allowed the stabilization of intermaxillary relations in centric areas when it was harmonized the maximum intercuspidation and the muscular centric position. We described, also the treatment and in our opinion the neuromuscular intermaxillary relations are the start point to obtain definitive stability for the oral rehabilitation in edentulous patients.

[Oral hairy leukoplakia].

At present HL: should be considered a marker of immunodeficiency, though not necessarily associated with HIV infection. In eight patients with HL it was confirmed that this lesion, in male homosexuals, in a precursor and marker of AIDS. The diagnosis of HL warrant all efforts to protect the immune system and avoid progression to AIDS.

[Massive pleural effusion secondary to hydronephrosis].

The most frequent causes of pleural effusion are congestive heart failure, advanced cirrhosis and nephrotic syndrome. In some rare cases urine can be found accumulated in the pleural compartment, being this entity denominated urinotorax. This phenomenon is generally considered secondary to an urinary obstruction or to an urinoma on the same side as the effusion through mechanisms not yet clarified. Given that it is a benign condition, easily resolved by clearing the obstruction of the urinary tract and that there is little information about it in the literature, we report a case of a massive pleural effusion secondary to hydronephrosis.

[Aeromonas spp. and Plesiomonas shigelloides in bivalves, mud, and water from the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica].

Bivalves, mud, and surface water were collected at three different sites of the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica, in search of Aeromonas spp. and Plesiomonas shigelloides. For their isolation, these bacteria were enriched in alkaline peptone water and streaked on MacConkey agar and on brilliant green bile inositol agar. This was followed by the biochemical tests necessary for their identification. Thirty-five strains of A. hydrophila, 58 of A. caviae, 43 of A. sobria, and 7 of P. shigelloides were isolated. None of these predominated nor was there any indication of a seasonal distribution along the 15 month's duration of the study. Seven strains of A. hydrophila and two of A. sobria showed the biochemical characteristics associated with toxin production (positive Voges-Proskauer and lysine decarboxylase tests). These species are widely distributed in the gulf and there is risk of contracting an infection while bathing or when eating raw bivalves from this area.

[Digestive intolerance in newborn infants with extensive intestinal resections. Nutritional problems and long-term sequelae].

The experience of two neonates with extensive intestinal resection and severe difficulties in the introduction of oral nutrients in presented. The pathophysiology and treatment of short bowel syndrome is reviewed, emphasizing the importance of maintenance of nutritional support as well as the factors that contribute to the readaptation mechanism. Mention is made of the complications and long-term sequelae encountered in these cases, whose body weights and growth were normal at the age of 5.

Mitogen induced lymphoproliferative responses and lymphocyte sub-populations in patients with sickle cell disease.

Mitogen induced lymphoproliferative responses and lymphocyte sub-populations were studied in a group of sickle cell disease (SCD) patients with homozygous SS hemoglobinopathy. Even though the response to a sub-optimal dose of Con A (0.5 microgram/ml of culture) was significantly decreased in patients with SCD, the proliferative responses to optimal doses of Con A, to PHA and to PWM were preserved in the patients. Addition of indomethacin to the cultures increased to a more significant degree the response to Con A of lymphocytes from patients than from the normal controls. Study of the mononuclear cell subsets indicated that the relative and absolute numbers of B lymphocytes as well as those of monocytes were significantly increased in the patients' group. The percentage of T3+ lymphocytes was found decreased in SCD. However, a rise in the number of T11+ and T4+ lymphocytes as well as in the helper/suppressor cell ratio was observed in the patients as compared to controls.

[Composition of fatty acids of the adipose tissue in 22 0- to 11-year-old normal children].

Fatty acid composition of subcutaneous cellular tissue in 22 children at different ages was determined. The obtained results served as reference values and as indicators of fatty acid composition change with time. Children below and above 45 days of age were compared. Palmitoleic acid showed the greatest variation in composition change with age in the two first months of life. The results are discussed.

Reissner's fiber and the wall of the central canal in the lumbo-sacral region of the bovine spinal cord. Comparative immunocytochemical and ultrastructural study.

Reissner's fiber (RF) of the subcommissural organ (SCO), the central canal and its bordering structures, and the filum terminale were investigated in the bovine spinal cord by use of transmission electron microscopy, histochemical methods and light-microscopic immunocytochemistry. The primary antisera were raised against the bovine RF, or the SCO proper. Comparative immunocytochemical studies were also performed on the lumbo-sacral region of the rat, rabbit, dog and pig. At all levels of the bovine spinal cord, RF was strongly immunoreactive with both antisera. From cervical to upper sacral levels of the bovine spinal cord there was an increasing number of ependymal cells immunostainable with both antisera. The free surface of the central canal was covered by a layer of immunoreactive material. At sacral levels small subependymal immunoreactive cells were observed. From all these structures sharing the same immunoreactivity, only RF was stained by the paraldehyde-fuchsin and periodic-acid-Schiff methods. At the ultrastructural level, ependymal cells with numerous protrusions extending into the central canal were seen in the lower lumbar segments, whereas cells displaying signs of secretory activity were principally found in the ependyma of the upper sacral levels. A few cerebrospinal fluid-contacting neurons were observed at all levels of the spinal cord; they were immunostained with an anti-tubulin serum. The lumbo-sacral segments of the dog, rat and rabbit, either fixed by vascular perfusion or in the same manner as the bovine material, did not show any immunoreactive structure other than RF. The possibilities that the immunoreactive ependymal cells might play a secretory or an absorptive role, or be the result of post-mortem events, are discussed.
