A cell-free system, active in protein synthesis, was constructed using ribosomes and supernatant factors isolated from the livers of winter-acclimatized carps. Upon seasonal adaptation, the hepatocytes of these fishes exhibited distinctive morphological features that were not sex dependent. The cytoarchitecture of the liver cell from summer carps is consistent with the cellular arrangements found when the rate of gene expression is high. During winter, several morphological features reveal that macromolecular synthetic activity may be clearly diminished.
Male and female winter-acclimatized carps were injected with insulin. This treatment resulted in a sharp decrease in the liver glycogen content. Although an increase in the ribosomal RNA level was also observed, a cell-free system obtained from the hormone-treated fish exhibited less amino acid incorporation activity as compared to the control fish. However, polysomes from insulin-treated fish exhibited a higher amino acid incorporating activity when a soluble fraction of untreated winter carps was used. Insulin induced a profound change in the cytoarchitecture of the winter carp hepatocyte. The cytoplasm and nuclei showed all the features of the summer carp liver cell. The nucleolar components were totally intermingled suggesting a high rate of gene expression as in the case of the summer-acclimatized fish.
To test the efficacy and tolerance of progestagens as contraceptives in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 200 mg IM norethisterone enanthate was administered to 10 patients, 0.03 mg/day oral levonorgestrel to 15 patients and they were compared with 18 control patients. There were 4 episodes of active SLE in 48 patient-months on norethisterone enantate and 6 episodes in 122 patient-months on levonorgestrel as compared with 9 episodes of active disease in 298 control patient-months (p = ns). There were no pregnancies and intermenstrual bleeding led to discontinuation of medication in 30% of patients. Progestagens may be an alternative contraceptive method in SLE.
During 3 years, a prospective study was undertaken to investigate the frequency of lung cancer (LC) in patients with a tracheostomy after laryngectomy for neoplasm of the larynx (LxC). The protocol required a thorax radiography (RX) and a bronchofiberscopy (BF) every 6 months in each patient. Of the 286 cases studied, a diagnosis of LC was made in 36 (12.5%). In 6 of these 36 patients, there were no symptoms suggestive of LC and the RX was normal, and the diagnosis of LC was made only by systematic BF. A surgical treatment of LC was possible in only 7 cases. These results suggest that there is a high frequency of LC in patients with tracheostomy due to LxC, and also that it would be better to restrict the follow-up with systematic BF to those patients suitable for thoracotomy.

Motivated by the diagnosis and treatment of two cases of nevoid or Goltz-Gorlin syndrome, we have taken a brief look at the literature and present these two cases, which display the four principal features defining this syndrome: multiple basal cell carcinomas, maxillary cysts, skeletal anomalies, and ectopic calcifications. Certain aspects are emphasized, including the association in one of them of basal cell carcinomas with a cystic adenoma or Brooke's tumor, which, although described by other authors, is infrequent.
UNLABELLED: The possibilities and advantages of the on-top plasty in the reconstruction of severely damaged hands are described. Based upon ten cases, a classification into four groups is made. In each of these groups different reconstructive procedures are applicable. Group 1: Intact thumb with loss of all fingers. PROCEDURE: Lengthening of the third metacarpal by on-top-plasty of the distal half of the second metacarpal. This simultaneously widens the first intermetacarpal space. Group 2: Partial amputation of the thumb with severe damage to several fingers. PROCEDURE: Thumb reconstruction by transposition of two phalanges of an otherwise useless finger. Group 3: Loss of the thumb and of two and a half fingers. PROCEDURE: Thumb reconstruction by transposition of the remaining basal phalanx. Group 4: Loss of the thumb and of three fingers. PROCEDURE: Thumb reconstruction by on top-plasty of the distal half of the metacarpals and rotational angulatory osteotomy of the fifth metacarpal.
