A polypeptide immunoreactive nonchromaffin paraganglioma in the periglandular connective tissue of glandula suprarenalis of a dog. A case report.

A nonchromaffin paraganglioma was found in the periglandular connective tissue of the glandula suprarenalis of a sheep-dog bastard and characterized by histological and immunohistochemical techniques. Insulin-, glucagon- and gastrin/cholecystokinin-like material was revealed within the cells of the tumour. Possible functional consequences of these findings are discussed.

[Cancerous and precancerous changes in the tumor margin areas of patients with bladder cancers].

In histologically investigated tumour marginal biopsies of 68 patients with carcinomas of the urinary bladder a great number of findings was detected, which have a decisive influence on the prognosis. Degree of severity and frequency of these changes increase with reducing degree of differentiation of tumours. Hyperplasias of the urothelium, papillary formations and low-degree urothelial dysplasias are not easily to be estimated in the evaluation of their dignity in connection with highly differentiated papillary carcinomas of the urothelium. Multiple biopsies are the prerequisite for a modern therapy planning, in which case the tumour marginal area is of particular importance.

[Carcinoma in the gastric stump--a study of autopsy material].

The general autopsy material of the Institute of Pathology of the Medical Academy in Magdeburg for the years 1977 to 1981 was reviewed and cases of stomach cancer, stomach cancer in resected stomachs and individuals with prior stomach operations were identified. In a total of 16,474 autopsy reports there were 354 with prior stomach resections of whom 39 had a carcinoma in the previously operated stomach, a frequency of 11.3%. The proportion of stomach cancers in the total autopsy series was 4.3%. Ulcus ventriculi was the most frequent reason for the stomach surgery which had been performed an average of 27 years before. In 87% a 2/3 resection according to Billroth II had been employed. Cancer of the stomach, in persons previously operated on for benign gastric disease may be regarded as a late complication of surgery. The implications of this finding are discussed.

[Histomorphological variants of carcinoma in situ of the urinary bladder].

31 secondary carcinomas in situ of the urinary bladder have been histologically examined. They exhibit a great variability of their histological features. This is due to the varying rate at which cells lose their specific properties. Besides urothelial carcinomas in situ, a squamous cell carcinoma in situ as well as the intraurothelial formation of malign signet-ring cells have been detected.

[Carcinoma in the operated stomach of the rat--a tumor model].

85 Wistar rats were operated on stomach. Carcinomas in the operated stomach were seen without additional application of a carcinogen 31 and 40 weeks after gastric surgery. Histologically adeno and scirrhous carcinomas were diagnosed. Metastases were observed in rats with gastric cancer. Dysplastic changes and chronic inflammatory reactions of gastric mucosa were seen. The enterogastric reflux is an aetiopathogenic factor in carcinogenesis. Because of reproductivity, high tumor rate, no additional application of a carcinogen and the little operative extent, this experimental model offers to be a model of carcinogenesis in stomach.

[Urothelial carcinoma of the bladder following cyclophosphamide therapy].

A report is given on a 73-year-old patient in whom a urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder developed 11 years after a cyclophosphamide therapy. Taking the international literature into account, possible developmental mechanisms are discussed. Patients who have undergone cyclophosphamide therapy should be subject to constant urological observation as a high-risk group.

[Histological and autoradiographic studies of the objective characterization of the degree of dysplasia in the urothelium].

282 biopsy specimens of tumorous and tumor-free urinary bladders have been examined by histological and autoradiographical means. There is no recommendation unified on an international scale for the histological classification of intra-urothelial cell and nucleus abnormities . The classification into three degrees of dysplasia is proposed. The exact characterization of urothelium requires additional objective methods. The increase of the average labeling index parallel to the increasing degree of dysplasia has been proved autoradiographically. Moreover, the change of proliferation pattern with the increasing degree of dysplasia points to the loss of physiological regeneration.

[Histologic and autoradiographic studies on the significance and terminology of von Brunn's nests in biopsies of the bladder mucosa].

Von Brunn's nests have been investigated systematically by means of histology and autoradiography in 201 biopsies of tumour-free and tumorous urinary bladders. They show the same proliferation behaviour like the superimposed urothelium under normal conditions and with inflammatory, metaplastic and dysplastic changes. Their sheltered location permits definite diagnoses even with detached superficial urothelium. In case of cystic transformation, a distinction between pseudoglandular, pseudopapillary and cribriform types is possible. They have to be distinguished from genuine glandular metaplasias in von Brunn's nests. Normal and metaplastic von Brunn's nests do not represent precancerous stages. They are supposed to be a protected proliferation reserve.

[Regenerative behavior of the human digestive tract under different pathologic conditions. In vitro autoradiographic study].

Tissue samples were obtained by operation on 23 patients with gastric and colonic carcinomas as well as gastric ulcers and polyps in the gastro-intestinal tract. The samples were taken from the pathological area and the "healthy" mucosa, respectively, 2 cm as the standardized distance from the respective place of finding. They were examined by means of in vitro-autoradiography with 3H-thymidine. The marking indiced obtained for benign, and malignant, tumours exceed distinctly the corrected labelled indiced of the normal mucous membrane. The marking values of the mucosa in the histologically inconspicuous vicinity of the carcinoma equal the carcinoma values. In correspondence to autoradiographic investigations by other authors and appropriate biopsy examinations in the neighbouring tumour regions, the in vitro-autoradiography is suggested to have some importance for the diagnosis of tumours.

[Physiologic regeneration of rat salivary glands as dependent on age].

The power of the physiological regeneration of rat salivary glands has been investigated with 3H-thymidine by means of pulsee, double, and permanent marking as well as the technique of marked mitosis. Animals aged 12 hours up to 24 months were available. The transitory increase of regeneration seen in all the three salivary glands of the bead around the 5th day of life is explained as a consequence of the adaption to extrauterine life. From the second month of life on, the marking index is below 1 p.c. The growth fraction, which was determined by means of frequently repeated puls, and double, marking amounts to approximately 40 p.c. at the age of 19 hours, some 8 p.c. with 6-weeks-olds and as little as 1 or 2 p.c. at the age of 18 months. The determination of the cycle phases by double marking and the marked-mitosis technique revealed the relative constancy of the S, G2, and M-phases. With advancing age, the G1-phase extends. The salivary glands of the head can be classified as stable tissues according to the autoradiographic results.

[Correlation of computer tomographic, kidney vasographic and histological study results in solid kidney tumors].

Computertomography evaluates renal expansion precisely. In 105 patients differential diagnosis by means of computertomography was 95% accurate. In 93% of the cases it agreed with renovasographic and histological findings. It was possible to demonstrate or exclude the intrusion of a tumour into the renal vein in 61% of cases of tumour of the left kidney and in 55% of growths on the right side. The computertomographic evaluation of the vena cava inferior was confirmed by the histological findings in 71% and 65% of the cases, respectively. It was possible to exclude lymphogenous metastasis in 89% of the cases. In 4% computertomography gave falsely positive findings. In so far as computertomographic examination can give an unambiguous evaluation of a renal growth and a certain proof or disproof of the intrusion of a tumour into the venous system is made, preoperative renovasography can be dispensed with. Information on the operability of the tumour should be supplemented by clarification of lymphogenous and distant metastasis.

[Experimental study on the pathogenesis of gastric stump neoplasms].

The influence of the duodenogastric reflux of the carcinogenesis in the operated stomach was tested in an animal experiment in 47 Wistar rats. Cancers were observable differently frequently under various intensity of the reflux dependent on the operation method. The carcinogenesis in the operated stomach (gastric stump carcinoma) will be influenced decisively by the duodenogastric reflux in the opinion of the authors. Conclusions for the practice were pointed out.

[Liver biopsy in cholecystectomy? A study on the need for liver biopsy in cholecystectomy based on the morphologic findings in both organs].

On the basis of 341 liver biopsies routinely taken during cholecystectomies using Menghini's technique the pathological changes of the liver in comparison to the degree of cholecystitis were studied. Because of the frequency of morphological changes detected in the liver tissue, the low risk of the procedure and the possibility to determine the bioptic area of the liver, biopsies are recommended to be routinely taken during cholecystectomy.

[Histological renal changes after short-term preoperative irradiation. A contribution to the pathogenesis of irradiation-induced kidney damage (author's transl)].

Early morphological changes caused by irradiation of the kidneys are presented. Due to hypernephroid carcinomas, the tumour-carrying renal ends were exposed to 1,100-3,150 rad during 2 weeks and nephrectomy was performed 3-7 days later. At this time, changes of all renal structures were evidenced by light microscopy. Their irradiation specificity and reversibility or irreversibility are discussed. Very early and simultaneous lesions of the renal structures were essential findings in our material. In the sequel, secondary renal hypertonia and glomerula nephrosis additionally occurred. The human kidney was found to be an organ sensitive to radiation. This should be considered when applying irradiation to the renal region.
