[The effect of norethisterone acetate and 17 alpha-cyanomethyl-estradiol-3-methyl ether on the serum lipid levels].

Noraethisterone acetate in a dosage of 5 mg/day led to a decrease of the triglyceride and beta-lipoprotein level in the blood serum in postclimacteric patients. In females with hypercholesterolamias by 17 alpha-cyanomethyl-oestra-diol-3-methylether a decrease of cholesterol by 12.9% was achieved. The sexualspecific properties of these connections forbid, however, a long-term therapy of hyperlipoproteinaemias.

Maintenance and genetic stability of vector plasmids pBR322 and pBR325 in Escherichia coli K12 strains grown in a chemostat.

The maintenance and genetic stability of the vector plasmids pBR322 and pBR325 in two genetically different Escherichia coli hosts were studied during chemostat cultivation with glucose and ammonium chloride limitation and at two different dilution rates. The plasmid pBR322 was stably maintained under all growth conditions tested. However pBR325 segregated from both hosts preferentially during glucose limitation and at low dilution rate. In addition to this general segregation process a separate loss of tetracycline resistance was observed. The remaining plasmid conferred resistance to ampicillin and chloramphenicol only, without any remarkable alteration of its molecular weight. Cultivation conditions in the chemostat were found that allowed the stable genetic inheritance of both plasmids in the hosts studied.

Quantitative determination of bis (chloromethyl) ether (BCME) in the ppb range by using portable air sample collectors.

Using the GC-MS technique a new method could be developed for measuring air concentrations of the carcinogenic Bis(chloromethyl)ether (BCME) at the lower ppb level after the compound has been adsorbed to Porapak Q in a sample tube. Simulation experiments have shown that the whole amount of adsorbed BCME can be recovered from the adsorbent and that the former disturbing factors (such as co-adsorbed water and thermal desorption that tended to decompose the BCME and thus falsify the results of analyses) are wholly eliminated. The storage time of BCME in the tube has no influence on the recovery rate.

Muscle beta-actinin and serum albumin of the chicken are indistinguishable by physicochemical and immunological criteria.

Chicken muscle beta-actinin is considered to be one of the "true" myofibrillar components due to its specific binding to isolated myofibrils. Surprisingly, the direct comparison of this muscle protein with serum albumin, both isolated from chicken, showed that they behaved identically under several electrophoretic conditions. Furthermore, immunoreplica gels and double-immunodiffusion tests with antibodies prepared against beta-actinin established the serological identity of both proteins. No significant differences were found by circular dichroic spectroscopy or in amino acid composition. In addition, the amino-terminal sequences of both proteins were identical (H2N-Asp-Ala-Glu-His-Lys-Ser-Glu-Ile-Ala-His-Arg-Tyr-Asn-Asp-Leu-). Combined, these results strongly indicate that muscle beta-actinin and serum albumin are similar, if not identical.

Biosynthesis of vitamin B12: mode of incorporation of factor III into cobyrinic acid.

Extensive chemical degradation of cobyrinic acid biosynthesized from a sample of factor III radiochemically labeled in its three methyl groups demonstrates that label is retained exclusively in the two methyl groups at positions C-2 and C-7 and confirms that the C-20 methyl group of the precursor is lost during formation of the corrin ring system.

[Adenosine deaminase activity in leukemia patients].

The activities of adenosine deaminase (ADA) were measured in the blood plasma, erythrocytes, and lymphocytes of healthy reference persons and in patients affected with leukaemia. ADA is increased in patients with acute immature cell leukaemia, in patients with chronic lymphatic leukaemia it is comparatively low in lymphocytes. In chronic myeloic leukaemia ADA activities are different depending on the activity of the disease. ADA-activities in the blood plasma, erythrocytes, and lymphocytes do not correlate with each other. ADA-activities in leukaemias may be regarded as an indicator of increased purin metabolism rather a as parameter of disturbed cellular immunofunction.

[Problems in using radioactively labeled bacteria in animal experiments. 4. Distribution of activities in the mouse following intratracheal administration of labeled Pasteurella multocida].

Intratracheal administration of 3H-labelled, 14C-labelled, 59Fe-labelled or 125J-Labelled Pasteurella multicida germs to mice resulted in more or less differentiated, nuclide-dependent, distributions of radioactivity in blood, spleen, liver, lung, kidney, and gastro-intestinal tract. All distributions were comparable to those following subcutaneous application. Elimination of antigen from lungs and other organs could be characterised by an e-function, once a certain level of distribution had been reached. Some of the antigen was persistent in the lung not less than 14 days. Extremely high activity concentration and persistence was recordable, following the use of 59Fe complete antigen. Phagocytosis of Pasteurella multicida germs through alveolar macrophages of the lung was secured by autoradiography. Most of the antigen seemed to be discharged from the lungs through the digestive tract. Antigen distributions recorded from immunised and non-immunised mice seemed to suggest that the fate of antigen applied was affected by the kind of immunisation. No difference in antigen distribution between non-immunised and subcutaneously immunised animals were recordable, following intratracheal antigen application, but is was clearly recordable, following intratracheal immunisation. Elimination of antigen from the lungs of intratracheally immunised animals was found to occur faster than it did from non-immunised animals.

[A survey of infant feeding during the first six months of life (author's transl)].

In 1978--1979 a feeding survey was conducted among infants during the first six months of life. 213 question sheets containing numerous items about breast- and artificial feeding and episodes of significant illness were replied to by 213 german-speaking mothers. The following data were especially remarkable: 68% of the newborn babies were initially breast fed, this percentage declining to 19% after the first month of life. Only 10% of all bottle fed infants received humanized milk formula exclusively. Most of the mothers introduced solid foods too early. The comparison of morbidity between breast, mixed-fed and exclusive artificially fed infants came down significantly in favour of the breast fed group. The different findings are discussed and a programme to promote breast-feeding while still in hospital elaborated upon.
