The process of Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN) is not restricted to the peripheral nerves, but also involves the central nervous system. In a 25 year old man with normal hair, abundant axon swellings and spheroids were observed in the spinal cord, brain system, and cerebral cortex. The findings in the sural nerve have already been published by Boltshauser et al. (1977). Accumulations of filaments in the axons and in the perineural cells were accompanied by Rosenthal fibres. The ultrastructural pattern of GAN differs clearly from that of Neuroaxonal Dystrophies.
Serum half-life of aminophenazone was measured in 23 children with acute viral hepatitis and children with normal liver biopsy of matched ages. In acute hepatitis the value was 6.71 +/- 3.34, significantly longer than in the normal controls (2.79 +/- 0.53). Two hours after oral intake of the drug the serum concentration was higher in healthy children than in those with hepatitis, but the difference was not significant. Especially in children with intercurrent acute hepatic disease account must be taken of impaired metabolism during long-term drug treatment.
After exclusion of a manifest diabetes mellitus occurrence and distribution of hyperlipoproteinaemias in 250 patients with atherosclerotic obstructive diseases of the lower extremities were examined. 54,8% of the patients showed increased serum lipid levels, in which cases most frequently hypercholesterolaemias (type IIa and IIb) could be proved. Patients with obstructions of the pelvic arteries had significantly more frequent hyperlipoproteinaemias than patients with more distal obstructions.
Investigations for the proof of isoenzymes of the alkaline phosphatase and the alpha-amylase in stool were carried out. The measurements of the faecal enzyme activities were performed in 96 patients with intestinal diseases. The disc electrophoresis in the polyacrylamide gel served for the separation of isoenzymes. The separated enzyme bands of the extracts of stool were compared with those ones of serum duodenal juice and extracts of the mucous membrane of the duodenum, the jujunum, the ileum as well as of the colon. Hereby up to 4 very much anodically wandering bands were present, which might be subunits or fission products of the alkaline phosphatase. In the alpha-amylase up to 5 bands could be proved, which were compared with those ones of the serum, the duodenal juice and the urine. A coordination of these isoenzymes concerning their origin is not possible. The faecal activities of enzymes correlate with the weights of stool. In exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and ulcerous colitis increased faecal activities of enzymes are found, the genesis of which is discussed.
In 63 patients with myocardial infarctions happening longer ago as well as in 17 patients with acute myocardial infarction the viscosity of blood was measured and compared with the values of a control group of 34 healthy persons which was compiled after exclusion of known factors effecting on viscosity, such as hyperfibrinogenaemia or increase of hematocrit. The viscosities of the patients with infarction were significantly higher in all degrees of severity than those of the healthy persons. The hematocrit value, the fibrinogen and cholesterol level which were significantly higher in patients with infarction than in healthy persons were regarded as an explanation for this. Apart from this there existed an increase of the factors of risk total lipids, triglycerides and uric acid in the serum in cases with infarction. The increased blood viscosity may be regarded as a factor of risk for the myocardial infarction, according to our investigations.
21 patients with hyperlipoproteinaemias of type IIa and IIb were treated with D-thyroxin (4 mg/die) after a placebo phase. The observed changes of the cholesterol and triglyceride level in the serum are described. Hypermetabolic and cardiac side effects did not appear in the patients. The possible sites of action of D-thyroxin in the intermediary lipid metabolism are discussed.
55 patients with treated hyperthyroidism (thyreostatics) underwent a T3 suppression test and a TRH stimulation test. 60% of the patients had a positive and 40% a negative T3 suppression test. While patients with a positive T3 suppression test always showed a positive TRH test, the behaviour of the TRH test in negative suppression test was different (68.2% positive, 31.8% negative). These discrepant findings are to be explained from the establishment of different phases of regulation. In negative TRH test the concentrations of hormones were significantly higher. Increased basal TSH values are an expression of an overtreatment with thyreostatics. In positive suppression test and TRH test after a therapy lasting at least one year the medication can be stopped. In negative suppression test, however, the therapy should be changed. The TRH test allows only evidence about the quality of the regulation of therapy. Finally it can be established that the two tests on account of their different working points in the regulatory system are necessary and not changeable between each other.

Five female mini-pigs underwent total colectomy including resection of the ileocecal valve. Sparing the terminal rectum, we reformed an end-to-end anastomosis between terminal ileum and remaining rectal cuff. In a second series 8 female mini-pigs have been colectomized using the same model. To delay intestinal passage, in addition a 10-12 cm long reversed segment of terminal ileum has been inserted between small bowel and rectal stump. Both groups were compared with a group of normal unoperated mini-pigs in a study up to 1 year, observing intestinal transit time, blood chemistry and general development of the animals. It could be proved that the reversal of a small bowel segment in colectomized animals leads to a prolongation of the intestinal transit time, to normalization of electrolytes and general appearance. Colectomy was only survived by animals with a reversed segment. The clinical application of a reversed small bowel segment following total colectomy in 1 patient was successful.

The enrichment of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in dated sediments from Lake Constance during the past 75 years corresponds to the general increase of European coal consumption within the same period of time. Coals are assumed to be the main source of heavy-metal enrichment; incomplete combustion (pyrolysis) of coal also seems to be responsible for the very sharp increase of PAH.
The incorporation of lauric acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid into phospholipids of lung and liver has been studied in tissue slices of control rabbits and of rabbits treated with bromhexine or ambroxol in doses of 10 mg/kg. A marked increase (up to 200% of the controls) of palmitic acid incorporation into phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) and phosphatidylethanolamine of the lung was found whereas the incorporation rate of palmitic acid into lecithin and phosphatidylethanolamine of the liver displayed no significant change. The incorporation of lauric acid and oleic acid into lung phospholipids was not accelerated. The observed effects were more marked in short time experiments (analysis 2 h after drug injection) than after treatements for 7 days. It is concluded that the phospholipid synthesis is stimulated by the drugs especially in the lungs. This seems to be of particular interest with respect to the surfactant system of the lung and might have some therapeutic relevance.

Ring-shaped implants of BioCarbon, a recently developed vitreous carbon polymer, were used for construction of continent ileostomies and colostomies in dogs. The stoma was fashioned by suture fixation of the intestine inside the ring, which was then placed subfascially in the abdominal wall. The exterior of the implant could be hermetically sealed with a screw cap. Implantation in 19 dogs performed so far showed a high rate of incorporation of BioCarbon devices.
Reported in this paper are studies relating primarily to methodical aspects of qualitative and quantitative identification of all classes of immunoglobulin-forming cells by means of fluorescent antibody in different tissues of calf. Particular attention was given to the respiratory tract. The method enables to study the postnatal development of the local secretory defence system in the context of all immunoglobulin classes.
The present publication is the first of a series on the enzymatic urea tranformation in soil. With about 2,000 pure cultures of micro-organisms it was possible to prove the very good urea utilization by the soil micro-organisms (bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi). Above all the fungi showed an excellent utilization of urea, while bacteria and actinomycetes were somewhat poorer. Contrary to this is the urease activity of these organisms, and that is the reason why fungi in soil may be regarded as short-time accumulators for urea nitrogen and must not be suppressed by inhibitors.
In a 10-year field experiment, the influence of fertilizing, cultivating, and crop rotation measures on the C-content of the soil, humus quality of the organic soil substance, and the yield was investigated. With cultivation of fodder plants only, the C-content of the soil can be improved by increased mineral and increased organo-mineral fertilization at any depth of cultivation. When in the same location there was a turn between cereals and green crops, a decrease of C-rate can only be prevented by increased organo-mineral fertilization. Continuous cultivation of root crops resulted in a decrease of the C-content. Deeper tillage of the soil generally decreased C-content. Within the years, a variability of the pure humin substances could be detected, depending on the rotation of crops and C-content. The composition of the fulvic acids is differentiated in dependence on the factors "time" and "cultivation". The effect of fertilization variants on the yield was different. Fertilization in that location with manure only, compared with mineral fertilization, caused in most cases depression in yield. Decrease on yield by deeper ploughing had the least influence with root crops.
