[Studying the role of Helicobacter pylori infection in recurrent abdominal pain in children].

The authors studied the role of Helicobacter pylori at recurrent abdominal pain in childhood. Helicobacter pylori infection hasn't been found at the 42 examined children. The endoscopy showed esophagitis in 34 cases. The quick urease test, the histological examination, and the bacterial culture are proposed to carry out in ulcus duodeni, gastritis typ. B ulcus ventriculi and not necessary to carry out if the endoscopy shows only esophagitis--emphasize the authors.

Adenocarcinoma of ceruminous glands. Ultrastructural, immunohistochemical and lectin histochemical studies.

A case of ceruminous adenocarcinoma is reported. The tumor destroyed the right pyramid, widely invaded the base of the skull and caused death shortly after the diagnosis. Distant metastases were not found by autopsy. The tumour cells reacted with epithelial markers and with the antibody against S-100 protein. Heparan sulphate proteoglycan seemed to be a good marker for detecting basement membrane ruptures and concomitant tumour invasion. Among the lectins BS-I and PNA gave the strongest reactions in the stroma. This is the first immunohistochemical and lectin histochemical report on ceruminous adenocarcinoma.

Selection and characterization of human melanoma lines with different liver-colonizing capacity.

Two human melanoma lines with low (HT168) and high (HT168-MI) liver metastatic capacity in immunosuppressed mice were selected in vivo from the A2058 cell line. After i.v. injection of the 2 tumor lines there was no significant difference either in the number of lung colonies or in the frequency and tissue distribution of extrapulmonary tumor deposits. These findings suggest that the selection in the spleen-liver system did not result in an overall increase in the metastatic potential of the melanoma cells, but rather that it represented an organ-preferential selection. The HT168-MI cells did not acquire an increased growth rate in vitro or in vivo, suggesting that other phenotypic alterations are responsible for the enhanced metastatic capacity. The 2 tumor lines were characterized by similar expression of HLA-A,B,C, transferrin receptor and melanoma-associated proteoglycan antigen. HT168 contained more NGF receptor, while HLA-DR appeared only on HT168-MI cells. This human metastasis model could be useful in studying the mechanisms of liver metastasis formation, as well as in revealing possible new targets of antimetastatic therapy.

Alterations of glycosaminoglycans in human liver and kidney tumors.

Glycosaminoglycans were investigated in surgically removed human liver and kidney tumours by applying biochemical methods. Four liver adenoma, 6 focal nodular hyperplasia and 9 primary hepatocellular carcinoma samples were compared with normal liver from autopsy cases and also with liver tissue adjacent to PHC. The studies on kidney included 14 renal cell carcinoma and 4 wilms' tumour samples. Three findings emerged from the quantitative and qualitative characterization of the tumours with epithelial origin. 1) The rise in the amount of total GAG was not limited to the malignant lesion. Similar increase was observed in benign liver tumours and also in the tissue adjacent to liver or kidney malignant tumours. 2) The dominant type of the GAG subclasses varies with the histology of the tumours. In benign liver tumours dermatan sulfate, in PHC and renal cell carcinoma chondroitin sulfate, but in Wilms' tumour hyaluronate was the prominent GAG subclass. 3) In all tumour-affected tissues dermatan and chondroitin sulfates had lower degree of sulfation. However, in the histologically different tumours various disaccharides showed reduced level of sulfation. The GAG alteration in renal cell carcinoma was compared with the prognostic factors of each individual case. This analysis showed a good correlation between HS/CS ratio and the prognostic factors of the kidney tumour cases.

[A case of ceruminous adenocarcinoma. Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies].

Case of ceruminal adenocarcinoma is reported. Tumor was diagnosed in advance stage, and within a month following diagnosis it caused death. Tumor started from right auditory canal, undermined the pyramidal bone and infiltrated great part of right side of base of skull, narrowing great foramen to a certain extent. Metastasizes were only the right of dura. Besides electron microscopic studies, authors performed the immune-histochemical and lectin-histochemical examination of tumor the first time.

[Effect of acute alcohol intake on certain cardiovascular functions in healthy young males].

.15, 0.25 and 0.5 g/kg alcohol in the form of 40% brandy in one week intervals was consumed by eight healthy, regularly trained young men volunteers. Blood alcohol level, blood pressure and ECG were registered before and 30, 60 and 90 min after, each alcohol consumption. The cardiac output was measured with a radiocirculographic method before and 45 min after alcohol consumption. The cardiac index, stroke volume, stroke index, and total peripheral resistance (TPR) were calculated. With increase of the alcohol dose the blood alcohol level increased, while cardiac output, cardiac index, stroke volume, stroke index, and the systolic blood pressure fell. The other parameters examined--heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, TPR among others--remained unchanged. The ECG was normal. The highest no effect alcohol dose was less than 0.15 g/kg (0.1, k/kg). It is concluded that, depending on the dose, alcohol has practically no effect on the majority of the heart-functions, however, in the range of 0.1 to 0.5 g/kg it has a depressive influence, i.e. lowers the pump-function of the heart and, at 0.5 g/kg the arterial blood pressure.

A study of adverse effects on the progeny after intoxication during pregnancy.

The pregnancy outcomes of 109 women who were intoxicated during pregnancy due to excessive amounts of drugs and other agents were studied. Seventy per cent of the women attempted suicide, and the intoxication in 78% of all cases was caused by drugs. The stillbirth rate (4%) was higher than that in previous and subsequent pregnancies of these index females. The rate of spontaneous abortions, major congenital abnormalities, minor anomalies, infant mortality, and specific childhood diseases did not increase significantly. Seven major congenital abnormalities occurred in 96 live births; five of these definitely had no causal relation with the intoxication. The mean birthweight of the liveborn infants was not significantly lower than that of their sibs but it was significantly lower than that of sibs born previously and that of the Hungarian population. The percentage of mentally retarded offspring (6.5%) exceeded the national figure (about 3%) and the rate of sibs (2.7%); however, the difference was not significant. Three of 93 children had serious behavioral problems.
