Effects of human seminal plasma on fertilizing capacity of human spermatozoa.

Using zona-free hamster eggs and salt-stored human eggs for assessing the fertilizing capacity of human spermatozoa, the effects of human seminal plasma on fertilizing capacity of human spermatozoa were investigated. The persistent presence of seminal plasma prevented sperm attachment to and penetration into the zona pellucida and vitellus. A series of experiments with zona-free hamster eggs revealed that, once the spermatozoa were preincubated in a seminal plasma-free environment known to induce the acrosome reaction, the seminal plasma no longer interfered with sperm-egg fusion. The native seminal plasma appears to interfere with both the acrosome reaction and vigorous motility of the spermatozoa, and this could be the reason fertilization fails when the plasma is consistently present around the spermatozoa. The fertilization-disturbing factor or factors in the seminal plasma appear to be macromolecular substances or substances associated with macromolecules.

Biologic effects of orally administered deuterium oxide on rat liver.

Rats were made to drink D2O mixed water (30: 70) for 6 weeks in order to study the biological effects of orally administered D2O on the liver. Heavy water administration results in gradual decrease in the body weight whereas the liver showed marginal increase in weight throughout the experimental period. Phosphatases and dehydrogenases were analyzed biochemically. Acid phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase registered fall in contrast to alkaline phosphatase, SDH and LDH, all of which showed a definite increase. Lipids, nucleic acids and proteins, estimated biochemically, gradually decreased throughout the experimental period in response to D2O feeding.

Adrenal testis inter-relationship in male Indian palm squirrel Funambulus pennanti Wroughton.

The present work attempts to study adrenal-testes relationship in a seasonal breeder, Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti. To assess the functional status of the adrenals, its two major components i.e. cholesterol and ascorbic acid were estimated biochemically and the results related with testicular functioning and its cholesterol concentration. In addition, histological studies of the above tissues were also carried out. Variation in adrenal function is clearly manifested by fluctuations in its cholesterol and ascorbic acid contents. However, no alteration in adrenal histology was discernible. Testicular recrudescence starts in January and peak activity is reached in April and May when adrenals are most inactive. End of June markes the beginning of testicular regression and maximal regression is reached in October.

The action of D2O on the motility of human spermatozoa.

The effect of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% D2O on the survival of human spermatozoa was investigated. More spermatozoa were affected and died more quickly as the concentration of D2O increased. Spermatozoa died instantly in 100% D2O.

Seasonal reproductive periodicity and thyroid fluctuations in female Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti.

Seasonal reproductive rhythmicity and concomitant thyroid fluctuations have been studied in the female Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti. The majority of the squirrels enter estrus during March and April when ovarian follicles attain maximum diameter. Ovulation starts in April and continues till June. A large number of degenerating follicles, indicating decline in ovarian functions, is a characteristic feature of the ovary in August. Minimum percent thyroid 131I uptake is recorded during May and June, i.e. at the onset of mating season. In July, which also marked the gestation period in the majority of the squirrels dissected, thyroid activity significantly increases. Gonadal regression begins in August and this is accompanied by corresponding fall in the thyroid 131I uptake. Alterations in thyroid cytoarchitecture during different months of the year are in accordance with the results obtained from radioiodine uptake studies. Fluctuations in thyroid functions during gonadal regression, recrudescence and peak gonadal activity are discussed in the present communication.

Oral D2O administration and enzymatic changes in rat testis.

Heavy water caused marked gradual decrease in the weight of the body as well as the testes throughout the treatment interval ranging from 1 to 6 weeks. Following D2O oral administration, an overall significant fall in the activity of acid phosphatase and glucose-6-phosphatase was registered. On the other hand, the activity of lactic and succinic dehydrogenases, alkaline phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase increases following D2O treatment. These changes in the enzyme activity are suggestive of an altered metabolism of the testes in response to D2O administration. Our data corroborate the view that biological systems do discriminate between H2 and D2.

Thyroid testis inter-relationship in Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti Wroughton.

The present work attempts to find out a relationship between testicular functions and thyroid activity in a seasonal breeder, Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti Wroughton. In addition to radioiodine studies used for assessing thyroid status during different months in the year, biochemical estimations and histological studies have also been undertaken with a view to determine thyroid and testicular functions. Testicular recrudescence in Indian palm squirrel starts in January and peak activity is reached during April and May. June marks the beginning of testicular regression and the maximal regression is reached in October. Fluctuations in thyroid function are clearly manifested by variations observed in radioiodine uptake during different phases of reproductive cycle. Cytoarchitecture of thyroid also changes somewhat during different periods of the year and these changes are in accordance with the results obtained from radioiodine uptake studies. The present investigation suggests that the thyroid has a definite and significant role to play during the period of testicular recrudescence and regression in seasonal breeder Funambulus pennanti and it seems to help in tapering off sexual arousal and regression rather than sudden switching on and off of the reproductive cycle. In addition, it seems to facilitate peak testicular activity. However, mechanisms whereby thyroid influences various testicular functions seem to involve a complex series of interactions.
