Post-exertion restitution of left ventricular systolic time intervals in healthy subjects.

The left ventricular systolic function was studied in 123 healthy men aged 23-24 years under the influence of exercise and during a two-hour restitution period. Left ventricular systolic time intervals (LVSTI) were evaluated by means of the Blumberger method with Holldack's modification before the exercise, immediately after its termination and after 30, 60 and 120 minutes. After exercise, a decrease was found in the absolute values of LVSTI and of the diastolic stage. During two-hour restitution, the authors found a decrease of left ventricular ejection time, total mechanical systolic time, total electromechanical systolic time, total ventricular electrical stimulation time and of the diastolic stage. A statistically highly significant decrease of all mentioned intervals was related to persisting, still after 2 hours, increased heart rate with which these intervals significantly correlated. The share (in percent) of LVSTI in the total cardiac cycle increased after exercise and was still increased after 2 hours following its termination. The relative increase of systolic time intervals was accompanied by a decrease in the duration of the diastolic stage.

[Effect of short submaximal stable-load exertion on blood serum insulin and human growth hormone concentration as well as on various biochemical and acid-base blood parameters in healthy individuals].

The studies on effect of short-term submaximal physiol exercise with stable load on blood serum concentrations of insulin, human growth hormone, free fatty acids, glucose and aminoacid nitrogen were carried out on 20 healthy men, aged 19--21 years. In addition, lactic and pyruvic acid concentrations and some parameters of capillary blood acid-base equilibrium were determined. It was found that short-term submaximal exercise with stable load caused the increase of HGH concentration and the decrease of IRI concentration. During such an exercise blood serum free fatty acid concentrations also decreased, while blood serum glucose and aminoacid nitrogen ones did not change significantly. Blood serum lactic and pyruvic acid concentrations and hydrogen ion concentration increased. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide partial pressure decreased and base excess increased. This pattern of changes indicates metabolic acidosis compensated partially by hyperventilation.

Influence of tobacco smoking on serum free fatty acid, triglyceride and glucose levels during physical training and post-exertional restitution.

Studies were carried out on 60 healthy men aged 20--24 years, divided into three groups. Group A (30 persons) performed work on bicycle ergometer in three phases: 420 +/- 90 kpm/min during 6 minutes, 840 +/- 180 kpm/min during 6 minutes and 1260 +/- 270 kpm/min during 6 minutes. Group B (20 persons) performed the same work after smoking 4 cigarettes. In group C (10 persons) the tests were carried out after they had smoked 4 cigarettes, without work load. In each group the serum FFA, TG and glucose levels were determined. It was found that just after the termination of physical exertion preceded by tobacco smoking (group B) FFA and TG concentrations decreased and glucose concentration increased more than in the control group (P less than 0.05, P less than 0.001 and P less than 0.001, respectively). During restitution, the FFA and TG concentrations were significantly lower (P less than 0.001) and the glucose level was higher (P less than 0.05) than in the group of non-smokers. After tobacco smoking, FFA concentration increased transiently in group C (P less than 0.001); the TG level did not change whereas the glucose level persistently increased (P less than 0.001). The results indicate the better utilization of FFA during physical exertion after previous tobacco smoking.

[Maximal gastric secretion in hyperglycemia in normal subjects and in diabetics].

The purpose of the investigations was the determination of the maximum gastric secretion during hyperglycaemia in healthy subjects as well as in patients with short-term and long-term diabetes. After the stimulation with pentagastrine, given in the dose of 6 microgram per kg of body weight in 0.9% sodium chloride solution continuous intravenous infusion, there were determined MAO, parietal and nonparietal secretions, the concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium, and the total secretin of these electrolytes in gastric juice. In healthy subjects hyperglycaemia was induced by intravenous infusion of 30% glucose solution. Under the influence of hyperglycaemia the decrease of MAO (p less than 0.001) in healthy subjects as well as in diabetics was found. In healthy subjects the decrease of the total potassium, chloride and magnesium secretion in gastric juice (p less than 0.001) was observed. In patients with long-term diabetes the decrease of the secretion of sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium and calcium was observed. There were no differences in gastric secretion in both groups of diabetics. The inhibitory effect of hyperglycaemia on the parasympathetic system and the decreased release of endogenous gastrine may be the causes of these changes. Insulin may also inhibit gastric secretion.

[Influence of coffee and amphetamine on the concentration of free fatty acids, triglycerides and glucose during exertion and in the restitution phase].

It was studied the effect of coffee and psychedrine on the behaviour of concentrations of free fatty acids, triglycerides and glucose in the blood serum during physical exercise with increasing load performed on bicycle ergometer. 20 healthy men received 200 ml of infusion from 20 g of natural coffee, whereas another 20 men received psychedrine 0.1 mg per kg of body weight. Their results were compared with those of the control group which performed only physical exercise. It was found that during physical exercise the concentration of FFA and triglycerides decreased and glucose concentration increased. These changes are significantly higher than in the control group (p less than 0.02). During the four-hour restitution increased glucose concentration and decreased triglyceride concentration were still persisting. However, during restitution it was not found the increase of FFA concentration which was observed in the control group.
