Genetics of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

A genetic family study was undertaken by photofluorography of the first, second, and third degree relatives of 116 index patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The index patients were ascertained in the course of an epidemiological screening. The pattern of familial clusters and the recurrence risk related to the number of affected relatives and to the severity of the disorder in the index patients support the theory of polygenic inheritance, a multifactorial-threshold aetiological model. The recurrence risk table for first degree relative, prepared by computerised data processing and analysis, may contribute to the early diagnosis and prevention of the disorder.

Mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome: three cases observed in Hungary.

Three patients are reported whose symptoms were very similar to those described in mucocutaneous lymph nodes syndrome, a disease prevalent in Japan. In one case the disease was complicated by otomastoiditis which prolonged the course and reactivated the symptoms. In the other two cases recovery was uneventful. No epidemiological relation could be demonstrated among the cases. Prednisolone was administered to two patients with immediate antifebrile effect.

Immune-complex phagocytosis by human polymorphonuclear granulocytes.

A new two-step centrifugation technique is described for the rapid preparation of viable pure polymorphonuclear granulocytes from 9.5 ml of venous blood. The phagocytosis of these cells was stimulated by soluble DNA-anti-DNA complexes, produced in vitro by incubating high mol. wt. DNA with sera obtained from patients with severe SLE. The measure of phagocytosis was the amount of nitroblue-tetrazolium (NBT), reduced by the active microphages. The reduced NBT was estimated by counting the formazane positive cells or by extracting and measuring it spectrophotometrically. The immune-complex phagocytosis of control human granulocytes showed a linear relationship with the cell count per reaction mixture and displayed a bell-shaped dose-response curve as function of the immune-complex. The immune-complex phagocytosis by SLE granulocytes was decreased by about 40 per cent as compared to normal granulocytes.

[Operability and prognosis of rectosigmoid cancer].

The data of 571 rectosigmoidal cancer patients treated between 1959 and 1972 analysed to establish the factors hindering operability. The most important factor was a belated diagnosis. Suggestions are made for early diagnosis to improve the rate of early operations and thereby the prognosis.

Fiberscopic diagnosis of gastric carcinoma: results of a two-stage screening.

After preliminary screening, 162 cases of gastric carcinoma were diagnosed by fiberscopy. Microscopic study revealed that 13 of these cases, i. e. 8% were in the early stage. The clinical features of these early cases are analysed. It is concluded that 1. persistent gastric symptoms call for fiberscopic investigation even if the previous finding was negative. 2. The relative youth dose not exclude early gastric cancers. 3. Improvement of the detection rate of early gastric carcinoma rests with the use of fiberscopy in combination with gastric biopsy.

The prognostic value of the non-protein nitrogen (NPN) content in the serum and the cerebrospinal fluid.

The amounts of total protein and nonprotein nitrogen (NPN), together with the pH were determined in serum and lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of controls and comatose patients before and after death. The serum/CSF ratio of NPN was calculated. Under normal conditions the value of this ratio is 1.65. The decrease of this value is a sign of worsening of barrier functions. If the NPN content of the serum and CSF becomes identical, i.e., when the serum/CSF ratio approaches or even equals 1.0, and at the same time the pH decreases in the CSF, then the prognosis is hopeless.

Comparative study of the effect of ethyl apovincaminate and xantinol nicotinate in cerebrovascular diseases. Immediate drug effects on the concentrations of carbohydrate metabolites and electrolytes in blood and CSF.

Randomly selected 34 cerebrovascular patients were treated with ethyl apovincaminate (RGH-4405, Cavinton) and 109 with xanitinol nicotinate. The effects of drugs given in slow i.v. infusions on the concentration of carbohydrate metabolites and electrolytes in serum and CSF were observed. Cavinton improved the paresis in 60.6% of patients while xantinol nicotinate did so only in 47.1%. On the basis of the biochemical changes it can be concluded that Cavinton enhances both the glycolytic and the oxidative glucose breakdown in CNS.
