[Local shwartzman phenomenon in animals with a complete absence and a reduction of the normal microflora].

Macro- and microscopic changes were studied in case of reproduction of the local Schwartzmann phenomenon in animals with various extent of bioisolation. It was revealed that the Schwartzmann phenomenon was positive in the usual animals and negative in the germ-free guinea pigs and in the animals with reduced enteric microbial flora given sterile diet. In the absence of microscopic changes in the germ-free animals there was revealed in their skin a neutrophilic-mononuclear infiltration of the derma, dilatation of the vessels, thrombosis of individual vessels. Apart from the same changes in guinea pigs with a reduced microbial flora, there were found focal extravasation and thrombosis of a somewhat greater number of vessels. There was no marked thromboses of small branches of the vessels, extensive hemorrhages or necroses which usually accompanied positive Schwartzmann phenomenon.

[Determination of autoantibodies to antigens of thymic epithelial cells of clean up team workers and patients who survived acute radiation sickness at distant periods after irradiation].

A group of patients, suffering from sequelae of acute radiation sickness (ARS), and liquidators was studied 5 years after exposure to a complex of factors resulting from the Chernobyl A.P.S. disaster. Studied were: the antibody titres to antigens of the cytoplasm of thymus epithelial reticulum cells and to Hassall's corpuscles the levels of serum immunoglobulins M, G, A; and the content of serum alpha 1-thymosin. Patients with ARS sequelae and liquidators showed a high level and incidence of autoantibodies to antigens of cytoplasm of thymus epithelial reticulum cells and to Hassall's corpuscles. There were no significant differences between the antibody levels in the blood of patients with ARS sequelae and liquidators. The antibodies were found to belong to IgM class; there was a correlation between the serum IgM titres and the rate of the indirect immunofluorescence reaction with autoantibodies to antigens of the cytoplasm of the thymus epithelial reticulum cells. To identify autoantibodies cryostat sections of human and mouse, (CBA x C57BL/6) F1, thymus as well as the epithelial and stromal cell culture of mouse thymus can equally be used.

[The effect of splenic factors on the course of the autoimmune process in New Zealand mice].

To exert an effect on the autoimmune process in 54 New Zealand mice aged 6 and 10 months, 0.2 ml of a solution obtained in perfusion of isolated pig's spleen (perfusate) was injected intravenously at intervals of 2--3 days (a total of 8 injections). The control group (43 mice) received injections of an isotonic buffer solution in the same regimen. After the end of perfusate administration the number of antibodies to DNA and the level of circulating immune complexes (IC) reduced markedly in the blood of the experimental mice as compared to these values in the control group. Kidney immunofluorescence demonstrated reduced number of IC deposits in the glomeruli of 6- and 10-month old mice of the experimental group. The perfusate contributes, probably, to intensified excretion of IC from the blood flow and kidneys of the experimental mice.

[Characteristics of the development of interphase death of hematopoietic tissue in dogs in response to gamma irradiation].

In experiments with 2-3 week dogs it was shown that whole-body gamma-irradiation with a dose of 3 Gy causes an insignificant absolute rise in the amount of degrading chromatin of the haemopoietic organs during the first 24 h following irradiation. After 48 h, this cell death parameter is normalized. A considerably lower radiosensitivity of lymphoid cells of dogs compared to small laboratory animals is indicated by a stable DNA content per 1 g of thymus, intactness of its structure after irradiation, and the absence of an increase in thymidine content of blood of young and adult dogs under the effect of 3-3.7 Gy radiation.

[Use of a combined epidemiological, virological and morphological analysis of rubella infection for an epidemiological survey of congenital rubella].

The results of composite epidemiological, virological and morphological studies of intrauterine rubella infection performed in 1979, in the period of maximum increase of rubella incidence in Moscow for 11 years (1969-1979) are presented. Investigations of 125 foci of rubella established a relatively high frequency of contacts of pregnant women with the source of infection in families of rubella patients. Twenty-nine cases of clinically manifest and inapparent rubella among pregnant women were detected and confirmed in the laboratory; intrauterine infection at 3-17 weeks was established in 16 out of 18 virologically examined women. The ratio of the disease forms was 3.5 : 1. Using laboratory methods of investigations, rubella of pregnant women was confirmed in 100% cases. From the aborted and fetal materials collected in the disease or inapparent infections of pregnant women rubella virus was isolated in 88.9%, marked pathomorphological lesions were found in organs of 61% of the fetuses examined. The organotropism of rubella virus was confirmed by a high rate (87%) of virus isolation from placenta and umbilical cords as well as by localization of morphological lesions in these organs and in the eye lens tissues. These characteristics of marked teratogenic potentials of the circulating virus strains indicate the necessity of organization of regular epidemiological surveys of rubella in pregnant women for prevention of congenital rubella in the USSR.
