Increased natural killer cell activity in patients with epidermodysplasia verruciformis.

Six patients with epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) were studied for natural killer cell (NKC) cytotoxic response of their peripheral blood mononuclear cells against K-562 target cells in an 18-hour chromium 51-release assay. Four patients displayed higher cytotoxic responses than controls did, whereas two others did not differ from controls. Patients with EV who had increased NKC activity were found to be infected with potentially oncogenic human papillomaviruses (types 5, 8, 9, 14, 17, 19, 22, 24, and others), and they have had multiple skin carcinomas and/or Bowen's precancerous dermatosis. Two patients with EV who had normal cytotoxic response were free of skin malignancies.

Angiogenic capability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in psoriasis.

The angiogenic capability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (MNCs) from patients with psoriasis was tested by lymphocyte-induced angiogenesis assay. The study was performed in 36 patients with psoriasis vulgaris, six with generalized pustular psoriasis of the von Zumbusch type, and five with palmo-plantar pustular psoriasis. When patients with psoriasis vulgaris were considered as a whole, no significant differences in the angiogenic capability of their MNCs could be detected, as compared with controls. However, when cases of psoriasis were classified into various types, the differences in angiogenic capability of MNCs became evident. This capability was found to be markedly increased in the active form of psoriasis vulgaris and decreased in the stationary stage of the disease. It was increased in palmo-plantar pustular psoriasis but markedly decreased in generalized pustular psoriasis of the von Zumbusch type.

[Effect of chronic exposure to nitrogen dioxide on biogenic amine levels in the brain of guinea pigs].

The experiment was carried out on male guinea pigs exposed to NO2 at a constant concentration of 0.1 ppm 24 h daily for 1, 2.5 and 6 months, or NO2 concentration was increased to 0.5 ppm twice daily, between 7:00 and 8:00 AM and 4:00 and 5:00 PM. After the exposure to NO2 was over the animals were killed by decapitation. The cranium was opened and the brain removed, and afterwards at 0 degrees C the left hemisphere was dissected into discrete areas which were then frozen on dry ice and weighed. The tissues were kept for 2-3 days at -20 degrees C, and afterwards the content of noradrenaline, 5-hydroxytryptamine and 5-hydroxyindole-acetic acid was estimated spectrofluorometrically in examined parts of the brain (thalamus--hypothalamus pons + medulla oblongata hippocampus, cortex frontalis). It was shown that the applied NO2 concentrations brought about slight and nonspecific alterations in the content of the investigated amines in guinea pigs' brain.

Immunomodulatory action of ampicillin.

Ampicillin was found to have an immunoenhancing effect on the expression of FcM human lymphocyte receptors, on the angiogenic potential of human lymphocytes and on the production of anti-SRBC antibody after in vivo administration to low-responder strains of mice. The effect of ampicillin on the graft-versus-host disease in irradiated F1 recipients of spleen cells from presensitized donors was found to be stimulatory when the drug was given to the recipients and suppressive when the drug was administered to the donors which had been preimmunized with a lower dose of antigen.

[Effect of sulfuric acid vapors on the respiratory system].

The influence of a mixture of sulphuric acid vapour and SO2 mist upon the respiratory tract of animals was investigated during on exposure lasting 8 and 12 hours. Marked inflammatory changes in the upper respiratory tract, bronchioli and lung parenchyma were found. These changes were manifested by inflammatory infiltrations and abundant production of mucous in the bronchial tree. A significant increase in the number of dust cells in the lumen of bronchioli was also observed. A decrease of mitotic index was found in the epithelium of oral cavity after inhalator intoxication with sulphuric acid. This may lead to disturbances in the repair of epithelium. The authors emphasize the intensity of changes in proportion to H2SO4 dosage.

Cadmium-induced changes in the histoenzymatic activity in liver, kidney and duodenum of pregnant rats.

Cadmium was administered in drinking water at a concentration of 50 ppm to female Wistar rats for 5 months before mating, and then continued during gestation. The histochemical evaluation revealed a relative decrease in succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and Mg+2-stimulated ATPase activities in duodenum, liver and kidney in the exposed rats. It is suggested that the resulting decrease in metabolic efficiency in maternal organs would be expected to exert an indirect, inhibitive effect on maternal-fetal transfer of nutrients, as reflected by fetal growth retardation.

Circadian rhythms of four marker enzymes activity of the jejunal villi in man.

Bioptic specimens taken from the lower duodenum were studied in 12 volunteers at different times of the day for the activity of 4 marker enzymes. The activity of alkaline phosphatase in brush border of villi was the strongest at 06h, while the nadir at 22h; acid phosphatase activity in the supranuclear zone and in macrophages was the strongest at 06h and reduced at other test times; the peak activity of 5' nucleotidase was found at 14h with the nadir at 02h; activity of NADPH was the strongest at 18h. It is suggested that circadian rhythmicity of intestinal function exists in man like in animals.
