[Characteristics of fatty acid composition of phosphatidyl cholines and sphingomyelins of low-density lipoproteins in the plasma of native inhabitants of Chukotka].

Contents of cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoproteins (HDL) cholesterol as well as phospholipid and fatty acid compositions of phosphatidyl cholines and sphingomyelins in low density lipoproteins (LDL) were studied in blood plasma of Chukot aborigenes--Eskimos as compared with Moscow inhabitants. In Eskimos content of HDL cholesterol was higher but concentration of cholesterol and triglycerides was lower in blood plasma. In LDL concentration of sphingomyelins was increased and fatty acid composition of phosphatidyl cholines and sphingomyelins was altered where amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids was elevated (20:5 + 22:5 + 22:6). The specific characteristics of the LDL phospholipids observed in Eskimos might be responsible for the higher liquid properties of the surface monolayer in the lipoproteins; this alteration might be important for the lipoprotein properties and transformation as well as for the properties of membrane-bound enzymes, for synthesis of thromboxane and prostacyclins.

[Changes in the sterol content of soybean oil after its thermal processing].

A study was made of alterations in the composition of soybean oil sterols after thermal treatment. It was established that in heat-exposed oils, the content of total sterols dropped 20 to 50%. Analysis of a sample of free sterols from soybean oil heated for 13 h demonstrated a slight decrease in the content of stigmast-5-en-3 beta-ol at the expense of a rise in the concentration of delta 5-avenasterol, citrostadienol, and 24-methylene cycloartanol.

[Hypocholesterolemic action of oils from the seeds of new selection varieties of winter rape and winter cress in trials on rats].

The capacity of new selected sorts of rape and winter cress oils to decrease a high cholesterol level in the blood and liver was studied in "cholesterol" rats. Basing on the data obtained a conclusion could be made on the hypocholesterolemic effect of the oils when they were given to animals. It is suggested that rape oil ("Agat", "Kubanskoye") and winter cress oil ("Sibiryachka") initiate the lipid transport in the blood and tissues thus leading to the reduction of the cholesterol level in the blood and liver tissue in "cholesterol" rats.

[Effect of retinol and alpha-tocopherol on the stability of phosphatidylcholine bilayer membranes].

The modifying action of retinol and alpha-tocopherol on the stability of bilayer phosphatidyl choline membranes was studied under control of their oxidation. The membranous stability was determined by the time during which the value of the ionic conduction of the membrane in a stationary condition remained unchanged. It was shown that the stability of the membranes modified by the addition of retinol and alpha-tocopherol was not a monotonous function of the modifier concentration in the membrane (but it was achieved through maximum). The ionic conduction of bilayer membranes modified by vitamines was constant with all the tested concentrations at which the bilayers were formed while high concentrations of cholesterol decreased appreciably the ionic conduction.

[Accumulation and transformation of dietary ergosterol in rats].

The results of experiments on rats given the ergosterol-containing diet for a long time indicate that ergosterol was incorporated in liver tissues in trace amounts which are not comparable with ergosterol concentrations exerting an effect in model experiments. Ergosterol was not detected in the liver after 3-day experiments. At the same time it was established that the proportion of unchanged ergosterol in rat feces was about 16% of the amount administered per os. The products of a possible ergosterol transformation (dehydroneoergosterol-24-methyl-1,3,5 (10), 6,8 (9), 22-hexaen-3 beta-ol; 24-methylcholesta-7,24 (28)-dien-3 beta-ol; 4-cholesta-7,22,25 (?)-trien-3 beta-ol; 4-methylcholesta-7,22 (?)-dien-3 beta-ol, and so forth were identified in feces.

[Effect of diets of different isomer composition of fatty acids on the blood vessel wall, blood lipids and platelet aggregation].

It was established in rat experiments that prolonged (4.5 months) use of the diet with a high content of spatial (trans-) and positional isomers of fatty acids exerted an adverse effect on the laboratory animals. They showed the impairment of the hemostasis integrity; namely of the walls of blood vessels (aorta, intraorgan arteries of the heart and kidneys), blood lipids, fatty acid composition and aggregation properties of platelets. The animals developed alterations similar to those occurring with the use of the diets rich in saturated fatty acids. The vessels manifested dystrophic alterations of elasticity and smooth muscle cells, whereas blood an increase in the content of atherogenic lipoproteins associated with a high content of total lipids and cholesterol. The ADP-induced enhancement of platelet aggregation was observed in experiments in vitro.
