[Behçet's disease and pregnancy].

A patient 34 years old, who was diagnosed of Behcet's disease during the third quarter of her pregnancy, is presented here. She was admitted to hospital because a large painful genital ulcer. The treatment with low doses of systemic steroids and steroid ointments allowed us the disease control and the fetal maturing. The fetus was removed by caesarean operation in the 39 week of pregnancy, without complications.

Fasting and refeeding modulate neutral amino acid transport activity in the basolateral membrane of the rat exocrine pancreatic epithelium: fasting-induced insulin insensitivity.

The effects of fasting and refeeding on amino acid transport in the perfused rat exocrine pancreas were investigated using a rapid dual tracer dilution technique. Unidirectional amino acid influx (15 s) was quantified (relative to the extracellular tracer D-mannitol) over a wide range of perfusate concentrations in pancreata isolated frm fed and 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h fasted and 72 h fasted and refed (24 h) animals. In fed animals transport of phenylalanine (1-24 mM) and L-serine (1-50 mM) was saturable and weighted non-linear regression analyses of the overall transport indicated an apparent Kt = 10 +/- 3 mM and Vmax = 7.0 +/- 1.0 mumol/min per g (n = 7) for phenylalanine and Kt = 16 +/- 3 mM and Vmax = 20.6 +/- 2.1 mumol/min per g (n = 5) for serine. Fasting animals for 24 h or 48 h did not change the kinetics of either phenylalanine or serine transport. After a 72 h fast the rate of phenylalanine transport (Vmax = 15.9 +/- 2.9 mumol/min per g, n = 5) was enhanced whereas the transport affinity (Kt = 11 +/- 3 mM) remained unaltered. L-Serine transport was essentially unaltered. When 72 h fasted animals were refed for 24 h the Vmax for phenylalanine transport was reduced to values observed in fed animals. In parallel experiments refeeding had no significant effect on serine transport. Perfusion of pancreata isolated from 72 h fasted animals with bovine insulin (1 mU/ml or 1 microU/ml) did not stimulate either phenylalanine or serine transport.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Cysts of the parathyroid glands].

Cysts of epithelial bodies are rare causes of hyperparathyroidism. Reported in this paper are 2 patients with clinical symptoms of hyperparathyroidism, high blood calcium levels and established hormones in their epithelial bodies. Cysts of epithelial bodies were diagnosed by means of angiography, computed tomography, and sonography. Various aetiological factors behind cyst formation in epithelial bodies are discussed.

Laparoscopic findings in eight cases of liver fascioliasis.

Laparoscopic findings observed in eight patients with fascioliasis are described, five cases in the invasive or acute phase of liver distomatosis, and three cases in the chronic phase. In all cases yellowish-white nodules of 1 to 4 mm in diameter were seen on the liver surface, and in four patients they also appeared on the parietal peritoneum. Close to these nodules, ribbed or vermiform formations of a color and consistency similar to that of the nodules were observed in five patients. It is thought that these findings correspond to parasitic microabscesses in contact with intrahepatic bile ducts. Other findings were areas of capsular thickening, adhesions, dilation of subcapsular lymph vessels and flattened zones of a cicatricial aspect. This last feature appeared only in the chronic form of the disease.

[Cirrhosis caused by thorotrast: apropos of a case].

We present the clinical case of a female patient with cirrhosis of the liver. The radiografic and histopathological studies demonstrated that de etiology of this cirrhosis was in relation with the use of thorotrast given during angiografic studies which the patient underwent 35 years ago.

The cerebellum of the frog Rana ridibunda. An electron microscopic study.

An electron microscopic study of neuronal types and different synaptic contacts has been made in the cerebellum of the frog Rana ridibunda. The Purkinje cells have a pear-shaped cell body and in their cytoplasm the organelles show a special arrangement because of the great amount of microtubules they contain. The granule cells are small, rounded neurons with a large nucleus surrounded by a thin rim of cytoplasm. The stellate cells are interneurons of the molecular layer whose large nuclei show a single finger-like invagination of its nuclear envelope. The afferent tracts to the cerebellum end either as climbing fibers or mossy fibers. The axon terminals of climbing fibers are large and the synaptic complexes exhibit all the features of a type-I Gray synapse. The mossy fibers reach the granular layer and synapses between them and granule cell dendrites are by far the most abundant. The parallel fibers establish synaptic contacts on the spines arising from the spiny branchlet units of the Purkinje cells and with the perikaryon and dendrites of stellate cells. The stellate cell axons cross the molecular layer and establish type-II Gray synapses on the Purkinje cells.
