Prevalence of HBsAg carriers among some tribes of Madhya Pradesh.

Prevalence of HBsAg was determined in 1314 sera obtained from 11 different tribal populations of five districts of Madhya Pradesh. Reversed passive haemagglutination assay was used for screening showed a HBsAg carrier rate of 2.99 to 21.54 per cent among the various tribes. Significant regional variation was also observed.

A simulation study of the neutral evolution of heterozygosity and genetic distance.

This paper considers a statistical test of neutral theory which can be applied to allozyme variation in natural populations. Computer simulation is used to derive the theoretical relationship between genetic distance and heterozygosity under a variety of neutral models employing stepwise mutation. It is shown that the relationship between these variables is robust to variation in the parameters of the models, and that a test of neutral theory can therefore be derived. Applications of the test in the analysis of data from natural populations are discussed in the light of the simulation results.

Mutagenesis of Protoplasts and Regeneration of Mycelium in the Mushroom Volvariella volvacea.

Regenerating protoplasts were obtained from mycelial culture of the mushroom Volvariella volvacea by the action of the lytic enzyme Novozym 234 in the presence of 0.01 M phosphate buffer (pH 6.0) containing 0.6 M NaCl. Regeneration was found to be poor in liquid medium, but more than 50% regeneration was achieved on solid 2% agar medium overlaid with 0.5% agar. Protoplasts of V. volvacea were found to be highly sensitive to the killing action of both UV irradiation and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. However, no morphological or auxotrophic mutants could be obtained from protoplasts by chemical mutagenesis. Four types of morphological mutants and one auxotrophic (adenine-negative) mutant were obtained from UV-irradiated protoplasts. The adenine-negative mutant of V. volvacea was found to be stable, not losing auxotrophy on repeated subculture.

Soleus muscle adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) levels in Mastomys natalensis with Dipetalonema viteae infections: effect of diethylcarbamazine.

Adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) levels in the soleus muscles of Mastomys natalensis during the patent phase of Dipetalonema viteae infection were studied. Decreased ATP levels were found in the infected animals as compared with the uninfected controls. Diethylcarbamazine citrate produced an 'anaphylactic reaction' and enhanced microfilaraemia in the infected animals, but did not cause any lowering of the soleus muscle ATP in the infected as well as in the uninfected animals.
