[Hospitalisation of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (author's transl)].

The clinical symptoms of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, transferred from other hospitals to the Pulmological Center of Vienna, were analyzed. Among 373 transferred patients there were 113 cases (30.3%) of pulmonary tuberculosis. A significant change in the range of symptoms between the examined period (1976/77) and former periods could be shown. By a more accurate regard of the symptoms a primary admission to pulmonary center should be possible in about half the cases and the interval between the primary symptoms and the initial treatment would be shortened in this way. It seems, that tuberculosis of the lung as common sickness only has historical significance, as acute illness of single patient it is still important.

Asthma

Group experience as a means of training medical students.

All medical students in a six-week psychiatric clerkship met once a week in "experiential groups." One week after the last group session a concluding and evaluative discussion was held. A detailed description of the students' responses and reactions is given. The results indicate that for the majority of the students, the experiential group was the most significant personal and learning experience they had during the clerkship. It effected better interpersonal communication among the students and improved their humane skill, empathy, and sensitivity.

Inservice Training

[The clinical picture of acute tuberculosis (author's transl)].

The clinical picture of acute tuberculosis infection is undergoing a change. The classic symptoms of pain in the chest and night sweats are giving way to general symptoms. In 50% of the cases the infection manifests itself as an acute disease. The observation that some cases of tuberculosis are not admitted to hospital until they are in a critical condition is ascribed to lack of "tuberculosis awareness".

Acute Disease

[Tamoxifen therapy in previously treated female patients].

We did a pilot study in 35 pretreated cases with disseminated metastatic breast cancer. These patients got a therapy of about 20 mg/day. We evaluated objective remissions, but also subjective responses. In good correlation to similar trials we found benefits in 35%.

Adult

[Indications for the surgical treatment of so-called idiopathic spontaneous pneumothorax (author's transl)].

Of 93 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax treated between 1969 and 1974, only 23 cases were managed surgically. The criteria for surgical intervention are discussed and the most important indications are summarized as follows: unsuccessful drainage over 10 to 14 days, recurrence of pneumothorax affecting the same lung, dangerous complications such as haemothorax, incipient inflammation et. The general conformity with examples taken from the literature is demonostrated.
