Phlebotomus sergenti parrot, 1917: morphological and isoenzymatic comparisons of two natural populations from Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) and Crete (Greece).

Samples of two Phlebotomus sergenti natural populations from San Juan (Tenerife), representing the western edge of the distribution area of this species, and Axos (Crete) were collected. The morphological comparison showed marked differences in the lengths of parts of the male genitalia, female pharynx, and spermathecae. The isoenzyme study revealed characteristic monomorphic phenotypes for glucose phosphate isomerase, hexokinase, and phosphoglucomutase in the Canarian specimens as compared with the Cretan population. These results confirm the heterogeneity of P. sergenti and indicate the utility of a systematic double approach for a revision of this taxon.

Application of numerical taxonomic methods on phlebotominae.

Numerical analyses (factorial analysis, ascending hierarchical classification, and cladistic) were carried out on morphological characters of adult phlebotomine sandflies. Contributions emerge to the taxonomy and phylogeny of the group. Classical taxonomy is largely confirmed for Old World groups, though the positions of some are adjusted.

[Taxonomy and geographic distribution of Phlebotomus (Adlerius) chinensis s. l. and P. (Larroussius) major s. l. (Psychodidae-Diptera). Status of species present in Greece].

Vectors of leishmaniasis have to be identified with precision. Some subspecies of the subgenus Adlerius and Larroussius have been recently raised to the specific level. Paleobiogeography justifies this opinion. So some past identifications and repartition maps have to be revised. According comparisons between sandflies from various areas, it has been established that the species present in Greece are: Phlebotomus neglectus for Larroussius of the major group and P. simici and P. balcanicus for Adlerius subgenus.

[The schizogony of Polychromophilus (Haemoproteidae), cosmopolitan parasite of Microchiroptera].

The schizogony of Polychromophilus was partially known by the findings of Schingarew, Mer and Goldblum who demonstrated microschizonts in the reticulo-endothelial tissue. The present work completes these data by showing the presence of macroschizonts in the lungs of both African and European species. These schizonts are characterized by their large size, the hypertrophy of the host cell and its nucleus and the evolution of the parasite apparently slow when young, becoming rapid later.

[The role of the rat in the dynamics of endemic schistosomias in Guadeloupe].

In Guadeloupe (French Lesser Antilles), because they are simultaneously infested with Schistosoma mansoni, which causes the human intestinal schistosomiasis, and Ribeiroia marini, a Trematode which sterilizes the Mollusk-host of the schistosoma, the rats (Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus) seem able to influence, at least locally, the infestation of the human population.

[Rats and bilharziasis in Guadeloupe].

The rats in Guadeloupe (Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus) may play a part in schistosomiasis in three ways: - by harbouring fertile S. mansoni, a fact which serves to increase the total population of the parasite and may eventually take part in the infestation of man; - by harbouring a great number of Ribeiroia marini, a trematode whose larval stages sterilize Biomphalaria glabrata, the vector of schistosomiasis; - simply by eating B. glabrata. The quantitative influence of these contradictory roles played by the rats upon schistosomiasis in Guadeloupe has yet to be studied.
