Tongue control of upper complete dentures: a clinical hint.

The role of the tongue in aiding upper denture retention is well recognised by clinicians, but this information is not always related to the patient. This paper describes a simple method of diagnosing the problem and training patients to control their maxillary denture during function, particularly when chewing food.

The role of overdentures in gerodontics.

As more people keep their teeth later in life, more and more patients in the future will still be partially dentate at an age when, previously, the edentulous state was the norm. The overdenture has a part to play in restorative dentistry for these patients. It can be a relatively simple, inexpensive prosthesis; but, like so many other aspects of dentistry, will provide long-term success only if the patient and the mouth have been assessed with care and a rigorous after-care programme instituted.

The softness and initial flow of temporary soft lining materials.

The initial flow of four temporary soft lining materials was studied with a simple laboratory test procedure, using a parallel-plate plastimeter. The flow in a clinical situation was further investigated, together with a clinical assessment of softness. The results indicate that a 2-mm thickness of temporary soft lining material is considered suitable for use as a tissue conditioner. The thickness of lining material is influenced by the clinical technique and by the powder to liquid ratio; however, the scope for altering the ratio is limited.
