[Tissue polypeptide and carcinoembryonic antigens in patients with breast cancer].

Tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were studied radioimmunologically in 112 patients with breast cancer. 39 healthy females and 13 patients with mastopathy were in control. In cases of incipient and localized forms of breast cancer, mean levels of CEA and TPA did not differ from those in controls despite the direct correlation between the number of patients with elevated concentrations of both antigens and stage of the disease. In cases of local dissemination of tumor, CEA concentration was 3 times and in patients with distant metastases-5 times that in control. TPA level was found to rise at a slower rate in the same patients as tumor process advanced. It was shown that radioimmunological tests for CEA and TPA provide an efficient means of evaluating breast cancer expansion thanks to its low threshold of sensitivity in identifying early cancer. A direct correlation between CEA and TPA levels was established.

[Radioimmunoassay of carcinoembryonic antigen in the evaluation of the effectiveness of breast cancer treatment].

Changes in blood--CEA level in the course of tumor process were studied in 123 cases of breast cancer. In primary tumor patients, CEA concentration was found to be in correlation with tumor expansion. It depended upon the degree of involvement of regional lymphatics rather than on the size of primary tumor, since the involvement of lymph nodes was matched by an increase in CEA level. A persistent decline in CEA concentration during and after treatment served as an indication that the latter was adequate. A steady rise in CEA level despite treatment was prognostically unfavorable. It preceded clinical manifestations of metastases.

[Role of plastic reconstructive operations in the rehabilitative treatment of women following mastectomy for breast cancer].

In 1980--1983, 15 plastic reconstruction surgeries were performed at the Center's clinics. In 11 cases, one-stage reconstruction of the breast was carried out after mastectomy for cancer. 13 females were mastectomized after Halsted and 2--after Patey (radical mastectomy). Good results were obtained in 11 cases. The paper contains a description of a procedure for one-stage mammoplasty for cancer which produces a good uniform bed for silicone prosthesis fixation as well as the breast contour. A musculocutaneous flap from musculus vastus dorsi and a silicone prosthesis were used in all cases of primary reconstruction. Emphasis is placed on the role of plastic reconstruction surgery as a factor of medical and social rehabilitation of females operated on for breast cancer.

[Results of endocrinolgic studies of the 3rd international crew of the scientific orbital station complex; Soyuz 29 - Salyut 6 - Soyuz 31 (joint space flight enterprise of the USSR - GDR). 2. Hormones and biologically active substances in blood].

Cortisol, insulin, somatotropin, thyreotropin, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, testosterone, aldosterone, c-AMP, c-GMP, prostaglandins (PGF1-x, PGF2-x, PGA + E), and renin concentrations in serum or plasma of the venous blood of the third international crew of the scientific orbital complex of "Soyuz 29 - Salyut 6 - Soyuz 31" were determined following the 7-day space flight. The increased activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system before the flight as well as variations in the pressor/depressor prostaglandin ratios indicate an increased strain during the pre-flight period. During the first stage of the post-flight period some parameters were changed due to the landing process and the returning to earth gravity. The associated physical load and the onset of reactions for enhancement of the orthostatic tolerance resulted in an increase of cyclic nucleotid and thyroxine concentrations. The relatively higher levels of the pressor PGs of group F in comparison with the prostaglandins A + E could be evaluated as a compensatory reaction for enhancement of the orthostatic tolerance. The cortisol and STH concentrations increased with growing motor activity. The variations seen after the 7-day space flight were essentially within the reference areas. It may be assumed that the readaptation was not yet totally accomplished by the 8th day after landing.

[Lingual taste buds following application of colchicine to the glossopharyngeal nerve in the rat].

Dissection of the glossopharyngeal nerve and application to it of colchicine that blocks axoplasmic drug transport were performed to study the effect of the nerves on the taste buds of foliate lingual papillae. It was observed that colchicine application to the nerve gave rise to destruction of the taste buds. The process of destruction proceeded more slowly as compared to that induced by nerve dissection. Colchicine application led to changes in the protein spectrum of the epithelium of foliate papillae. The absence of changes in the protein spectrum of the epithelium of foliate papillae and the presence of nerve fibers in the epithelium of the taste buds on exposure to colchicine provide evidence against its direct toxic effect on the taste buds, giving rise to their destruction. The changes seen in the taste buds result from the blocked transport of factors that participate in neurotropic control of the taste buds.
