[Teaching physical pulmonary examination through the problem-based method].

Abstract

Action-research was accomplished at the Federal University of Goiás College of Nursing in 1998 aiming at implementing and analyzing the teaching resources of physical pulmonary examination through the problem-based method. The Arch Method Phases were developed with sophomores in the undergraduate Nursing Course. During the Conclusion Hypothesis phase, the need of various activities in order to fix the theme was observed. In the theoretical and psycho-motor evaluation, we verified that the students had more difficulty in performing percussion and palpitation. It was concluded that the application of the problem-based pedagogy in physical examination was feasible.

Teaching nursing research to undergraduates: a text analysis of instructors' intentions.

Reviews of teaching strategies for undergraduate nursing research have been organized according to (a) the type of learning to be achieved, such as learning by doing, or (b) the specific teaching strategy, such as a poster session. For this text analysis, a new tack was taken to reveal the intentions of undergraduate nursing research instructors for student learning. Giorgi's (1985) descriptive phenomenological method was used to analyze 77 narrative reports of instructors about research teaching strategies. Seven intentions were identified, including desensitizing negative perceptions about research and stimulating collaborative learning about research. The intentions were contrasted in scope and relevance to frameworks organized according to learning goals or teaching techniques. The relevance of the intentions was considered in relation to critical trends influencing nursing education.

Research: an essential skill of a graduate nurse?

This paper discusses a research project undertaken by undergraduate nursing students, which includes data collection and provides transferable skills as well as a secure grounding for future research work. There is an expectation that nurse graduates should have research skills, but disagreement about how these skills should be acquired. This paper puts forward the case that undergraduate nurses should have some experience of "hands-on" research for the same reason that they undertake training in clinical skill acquisition, i.e., the skills in question are an essential feature of their role as a nurse. It is further argued that a research project develops transferable skills, which are expected from graduates of any discipline, and are much sought after by employers. In the light of present and future changes in nursing roles such transferable skills would better equip nurses to meet such changing demands in their professional role.
