Performance evaluation of a hand-held, semiconductor (CdZnTe)-based gamma camera.

Abstract

We have designed and developed a small field of view gamma camera, the eZ SCOPE, based on use of a CdZnTe semiconductor. This device utilises proprietary signal processing technology and an interface to a computer-based imaging system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the eZ scope in comparison with currently employed gamma camera technology. The detector is a single wafer of 5-mm-thick CdZnTe that is divided into a 16x16 array (256 pixels). The sensitive area of the detector is a square of dimension 3.2 cm. Two parallel-hole collimators are provided with the system and have a matching (256 hole) pattern to the CdZnTe detector array: a low-energy, high-resolution parallel-hole (LEHR) collimator fabricated of lead and a low-energy, high-sensitivity parallel-hole (LEHS) collimator fabricated of tungsten. Performance measurements and the data analysis were done according to the procedures of the NEMA standard. We also studied the long-term stability of the system with continuous use and variations in ambient temperature. Results were as follows. INTRINSIC ENERGY RESOLUTION: 8.6% FWHM at 141 keV.LINEARITY: There was excellent linearity between the observed photopeaks and the known gamma ray energies for the given isotopes. INTRINSIC SYSTEM UNIFORMITY: For the central field of view, the integral uniformity and the differential uniformity were, respectively, 1.6% and 1.3% with the LEHR collimator and 1.9% and 1.2% with the LEHS collimator. SYSTEM SPATIAL RESOLUTION: The FWHM measurements made at the surface of the collimator were 2.2 mm (LEHR) and 2.9 mm (LEHS).CONTRAST TEST: The average S/N ratios (i.e. counts in the irradiated pixel divided by counts in the surrounding pixels) for the inner ring pixels (8)/outer ring pixels (16) using the LEHS collimator and LEHR collimator were 3.2%/0.2% and 3.7%/0.3%, respectively. COUNT RATE CHARACTERISTICS: We could not determine the maximum count rate and the 20% loss count rate from these data because the plateau was not reached while using the solutions measured. SYSTEM SENSITIVITY: The average acquisitions were 11,052 cpm/MBq (LEHR) and 28,590 cpm/MBq (LEHS). TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE: The system displayed minimum corresponding shift in cps with temperature changes in the measured temperature range. We designed and developed a semiconductor-based gamma camera using CdZnTe. The basic performance of this camera compares favourably with the existing gamma camera technology that is deployed in the medical field today. The most significant differences include the spatial resolution, sensitivity, high count rate characteristics and energy resolution. We believe that this device will be of value for a number of clinical applications including sentinel node detection and radiopharmaceutical-guided surgery.

The Interrelationship between Cadmium, Smoking, and Migraine in the ELSA-Brasil Study.

This study explored the relationship between serum cadmium (Cd), smoking exposure, and migraine in the ELSA-Brasil cohort (2008-2010). The analysis included 2,750 participants whose serum Cd levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Smoking exposure was assessed using self-report data of active smoking and second-hand smoke. Migraine, including definite and probable migraine, was diagnosed according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd edition (ICHD-3). Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds of migraine across serum Cd quintiles, using the third quintile as the reference category, while linear regression examined the relationship between smoking exposure and Cd levels. Polynomial contrasts tested linear trends. Participants had a mean (SD) age of 53.2 (9.0) years and 53.1% were women. Migraine prevalence was 29.1% (including probable migraine). Individuals with migraine had slightly higher median serum Cd levels than controls [0.050 µg/L (IQR 0.035-0.077) vs. 0.048 µg/L (0.035-0.066); p = 0.021], although smoking exposure scores did not differ between groups. Smoking exposure showed a strong positive association with serum Cd concentrations (p-trend < 0.001). Participants in the highest Cd quintile had greater odds of migraine [aOR 1.51 (95% CI 1.09-2.08), p = 0.011] after adjustment for smoking exposure and sociodemographic and clinical confounders. Sex-stratified analysis yielded even stronger associations among males [aOR 1.84 (95% CI 1.07-3.16), p = 0.027]. However, in the sensitivity analysis including definite migraine cases only, this association was no longer significant [aOR: 1.14 (0.71, 1.83), p = 0.579]. Main findings suggest that Cd exposure from smoking may contribute to migraine occurrence, particularly in males. However, other sources of Cd that could influence migraine should not be disregarded, and future investigation in this field is warranted.

Long-term PFOA and cadmium Co-contamination alters soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling: Insights from metagenomics and metabolomics.

The co-existence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and cadmium (Cd) in soil poses a combined threat to microbial communities. However, the ecological effects and underlying mechanisms of their long-term combined exposure remain poorly understood. This study conducted a 90-day soil microcosm experiment to systematically investigate the effects of individual and combined effects of PFOA and Cd on microbial communities. Our results demonstrated that combined pollution of PFOA and Cd significantly affected four soil enzyme activities associated with carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling. It also influenced microbial thermal activity with an IC50 of PFOA at 0.94 mg/kg. The toxic interaction between PFOA and Cd varied with both toxicity indicators and exposure time. At the community level, PFOA and Cd synergistically reduced bacterial diversity and richness, while exerting more complex interactive effects on fungal communities. Metagenomic analysis revealed that PFOA and Cd significantly affected carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling by inhibiting inorganic phosphorus solubilization genes (gcd, pqqC) and altering key genes in carbon fixation and nitrogen transformation. Metabolomic profiling further demonstrated that PFOA disrupted membrane lipid homeostasis and amino acid metabolism. Meanwhile, the co-existence of Cd exacerbated disturbances in sugar and carbon metabolism. Our findings provide genetic-level insights into microbial responses to long-term PFOA and Cd co-contamination. These results are essential for risk assessment at such co-contamination sites.

Watershed-scale risk assessment of cadmium contamination in Chinese cropland soils: Dual pathways of irrigation input and flood-driven transport.

Irrigation and flood events serve as critical pathways for the transport of cadmium (Cd) from industrial sources into cropland soils at the watershed scale, constituting a major driver of widespread Cd contamination in China's cropland soil. This study evaluated the risk of Cd contamination in cropland soils across China's nine major river basins at the watershed scale, focusing on the contributions of irrigation and flood events, and conducted a sensitivity analysis of key risk factors. The assessment was conducted within a framework that considered factors including hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. The results revealed that numerous watersheds in southeastern China are exposed to dual pressures of Cd contamination risks in cropland soils, driven by both irrigation practices and flood events. Watersheds categorized as High-High, High-Moderate, or Moderate-High risk, reflecting combined Cd contamination risks from irrigation and flood, are vital to China's grain production, contributing 67.1 % of the national cropland area and 66.4 % of the grain yield. The study suggests localized strategies for managing cropland soils Cd contamination risks from irrigation and flood at the watershed scale in China, alongside strengthened cross-regional collaboration in southeastern China.
