[Study on the relationship between toddler temperament and development (first report)--the correlation among toddler temperament, maternal perception and rearing environment].

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify how a child's temperament and maternal perception influences the rearing environment. As the conceptual framework, we used A.J. Sameroff's transactional model and Miyake's conceptual model of mother and child. The following process was hypothesized: toddler temperament influences maternal perception, which in turn influences rearing environment under which children are developing. Questionnaires concerning toddler temperament, maternal perception and rearing environment were sent to mothers whose children were scheduled to receive 1 year and 6 months child health examinations, and results from 306 mothers and children who answered the questionnaires were analyzed. The results were as follows: (1) Child temperament showed a tendency to accord with maternal perception of how easy it is to handle him/her. (2) Maternal perception was related to rearing environment. (3) Temperamental characteristics were related to rearing environment. (4) While the influence of child temperament and maternal perception on the rearing environment was not shown to be strong, the hypothesized process of this study was supported to a certain degree. From these results, it appears that it is important to pay attention to a child's temperament as a contributing factor in the health practice of mother and child.

Perceived parental efficacy: concept analysis.

AIMS: This paper describes a concept analysis carried out to remove some of the ambiguity surrounding the conceptual meaning of perceived parental efficacy and to distinguish it from related concepts such as parental confidence and parental competence. BACKGROUND: Constructing parental efficacy is a crucial step for family members after the birth of their first child. For some authors, perceived parental efficacy is a motor for adequate parental practices. Confusion about the definition and measurement of this concept has hindered both psychology and nursing practice and research. Concept delineation and concept clarification are required in order to further the development of the concept of perceived parental efficacy. METHODS: A literature search using a variety of online databases yielded 113 articles between the years 1980 and 2000. The final sample (n=60) consisted of 30 articles from two disciplines: nursing and psychology. A content analysis of the literature was done using Rodger's evolutionary concept analysis method. FINDINGS: Content analysis of the literature yielded four contributors to perceived parental efficacy: positive enactive mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion and an appropriate physiological and affective state. Perceived parental efficacy can thus be defined as 'beliefs or judgements a parent holds of their capabilities to organize and execute a set of tasks related to parenting a child'. CONCLUSION: This conceptual analysis has allowed perceived parental efficacy to be distinguished from parental confidence and parental competence. Both nursing and psychology research, practice and education will benefit from a more precise and delineated concept.

Child Rearing↗

[A study to establish screening standards for determining cases for follow-up on health check-ups at 4 months, 18 months and 3 years of age from the viewpoint of child-rearing support].

OBJECTIVE: For maternal and child health, in addition to assistance to children, support to guardians is needed with the change in the social environment due to child-rearing. In Kobe city, from 2002/ 04/01, interview sheets for health check-ups at 4 months, 18 months and 3 years of age were revised and questions about child-rearing were added. The purpose of the present study was to clarify revisions to interview sheets regarding childcare support. METHODS: A total of 3,308 cases of mothers and children who underwent their health check-ups between 2002/04/01 and 2002/12/31 were surveyed, and the replies in the interview sheets were analyzed using the chi-square test for independence and the Pearson's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: In addition to children's development, factors for child-rearing in the home, including cooperation from the father, are of great importance. Moreover, subjectivity about mother's child-rearing is influenced by the support of child-rearing friends. CONCLUSIONS: Public health nurses should use not only the replies in interview sheets but also the appearance of guardians at health check-ups as important factors for screening. Further consideration of the influence of each question for evaluation is necessary to establish screening standards.
