[Abortion from the Catholic perspective].

Abstract

The embryo possesses the right to life. Therefore abortion is an forbidden act of killing. There is no sufficient reason to justify it. Especially the burden of pregnancy in situations of social conflicts and change of carriere-plans cannot justify abortion. Also there can be no demand of conscience to legitimate an abortion. The Catholic Church itself offers support for women in conflict situations. The Church condemns abortion, not the person, who needs a special attention in such a situation.

Crimes and misdemeanours: the case of child abandonment.

In 2002, a child was abandoned in a Burger King restaurant in Amsterdam by a Chinese woman, who hoped that the baby would be picked up by someone able to give the child a better life. She was convicted for child abandonment and imprisoned. Whereas some forms of child abandonment are criminalised, others are socially accepted and not even on the ethics agenda. This paper is an invitation to reflect on the inconsistency in the ways in which we prosecute, punish or try to correct some forms of child abandonment and yet make allowances for others.

[Comprehensive healthcare for female victims of sexual violence: the experience of the Women's Comprehensive Healthcare Center, State University in Campinas, Brazil].

The Women's Comprehensive Healthcare Center (CAISM) has provided care for women who have suffered sexual violence since 1986. Since 1998, a special multidisciplinary team has been in charge of emergency and long-term care for victims of sexual violence. From August 1998 to May 2006, 1,174 women were treated, with an average of 150 per year in the last five years. During the same period, 71/109 women who became pregnant after rape had their pregnancies terminated, 23/109 continued the pregnancy to term, and 15/109 did not undergo abortion due to gestational age greater than 20 weeks. In Brazil, there are not enough public services to treat female victims of sexual violence who require legal abortion. Nationwide implementation of new services should be encouraged, in addition to all measures known to reduce the problem such as sex education in schools and widespread information and easy access to effective contraception.
