[Individually controlled sedation using Midazolam].

Abstract

Midazolam might be an alternative to general anesthesia for noncooperative children. 40 children were treated during 94 midazolam sedations to evaluate the potential dental therapy. An average of 2 fillings and 1 endodontic treatment was possible per sedation. The initial Midazolam dosage was 0.6 mg/kg. Every 15 min another 0.3 mg Midazolam/kg were administered to maintain the treatability of the children. 30 min after the initial Midazolam dosage dental treatment could be started. The average duration of a sedation was 76 min. Our results suggest that sedations complement under dental treatment general anesthesia.

Serious professional misconduct arising out of dental anaesthesia and sedation.

This paper reviews three recent decisions of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council on appeal from decisions of the Professional Conduct Committee of the General Dental Council, in which questions of general anaesthesia, sedation and resuscitation were raised. The recommendations of the Poswillo Report on general anaesthesia, sedation and resuscitation in dentistry of March 1990 are considered with respect to these three cases, and an assessment made as to whether or not the incidents which gave rise to them would have occurred had the recommendations been implemented. The implications of the Poswillo Report for the maintenance of professional standards of conduct by the General Dental Council in relation to the use of general anaesthesia, sedation and resuscitation are discussed.

The specialisation of oral surgery in general practice.

Much has been written recently on the subject of introducing a specialist title in oral surgery and the establishment of specialist oral surgery practices. The aim of my elective was to conduct a literature review, interview general practitioners involved in oral surgery, and examine the feasibility of undertaking oral surgery in a specialist practice.
