[The evoked brain activity during hyperbaric exposure].

Abstract

Changes of amplitude-temporal parameters of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) under hyperbaric action testify to reconstruction of the activity of functional brain systems participating in the generation of responses to light stimulation. The revealed EP changes depend both on conditions of hyperbarism and on individual characteristics of subjects. The parameters of VEPs may manifest the estimation of common functional state under prolonged extreme influences.

Methods for building an olfactometer with known concentration outcomes.

We provide detailed instructions and part selections for construction of a five-channel air dilution olfactometer capable of generating neat odorants and binary mixtures at a range of known concentrations. At the heart of the olfactometer is an odorant canister that is (1) cheap and readily available, (2) safe and durable, (3) has minimal odor adherence, (4) is easily incorporated into any olfactometer, and critically (5) produces a highly consistent stimulus. By flowing a given carrier gas at a given flowrate through a given odorant in this canister, the same end-vapor is achieved. Flow/concentration outcomes are provided for several odorants routinely used in olfactometry. This tool will enable researchers to generate known concentrations without expensive analytical machinery.

A simple radon chamber for educational use.

Radon chambers are typically able to maintain a constant, known concentration of radon by pumping a constant activity concentration of radon gas into the chamber. A radon chamber has been designed by placing a radon source inside the chamber volume and allowing radon to build up inside the chamber. Because the radon concentration is not constant, calculations have been made to determine the integrated equivalent constant radon concentration in MBqhm for up to 4 d. The chamber, made by placing a radium dial inside an incubator, has interior dimensions of 87.6 cm x 55.9 cm x 51.4 cm for a total volume of 0.25 m. The chamber can produce an integrated equivalent constant radon activity concentration level of 0.013 MBq h m over the initial 24 h, 0.043 MBq h m over the initial 48 h, 0.078 MBq h m over the initial 72 h, and 0.118 MBq h m over the initial 96 h. The chamber can also demonstrate, for educational purposes, the kinetics of the build-up of a radioactive gas in an enclosed environment as well as the kinetics of washout and leakage.

The steam laboratory of the Institut de Médecine Navale du Service de Santé des Armées: a set of tools in the service of the French Navy.

Accidental exposure to hot water steam is a potential risk in the French Navy, and particularly on nuclear submarines or ships. Direct human exposure to this extreme environment during an accident leads to death in a short time. In order to protect the crew members of the French Navy, a laboratory was created at the Institut de Médecine Navale du Service de Santé des Armées (IMNSSA). A set of tools was developed to study the effects of exposure to hot water steam atmospheres on human physiology and on the protective capacities of textile fabrics and equipment. A testing device allows the quantification of the protective capacities of fabrics under steam stresses. A thermal manikin and a steam climatic chamber allow the evaluation of the protective capacities of equipment. The tests on fabrics and on garments were in good agreement. Water vapour impermeable fabrics and garments provide greater protection in steamy conditions. Moreover, the thicker the sample or garment, the higher the protection it gives. Care should be taken to verify that fabrics keep their thermal characteristics under steam stress. These characteristics, measured under standard comfortable conditions, are not always indicative of the protective abilities of the fabrics under steamy conditions.
