Multiple esophageal duplication cysts.

Abstract

During thoracic exploration for resection of an esophageal duplication cyst, a second such cyst was encountered and removed. Although the association of esophageal duplication cysts with other intestinal duplications has been described, to our knowledge this is the first reported case of multiple esophageal duplication cysts.

Robotic assisted thoracic surgery for resection of an esophageal cyst.

Many centers around the world are now developing robotic surgical programs. The benefit of robotics, particularly in those centers where there is already expertise with minimally invasive surgical techniques, is unclear. We present the case of a 58-year-old man presenting with an esophageal cyst. This was removed using a robotic assisted, VATS (video assisted thoracic surgery) approach. The technical details of the procedure are described. Additionally, a discussion of the relative merits of using a robotic rather than a standard minimally invasive approach is discussed. In a procedure such as the case described, the critical parts of the procedure are focused within a small operative field. We believe that the articulating instrumentation and the 3-dimensional magnified view provided by the robot offers significant advantages over a standard VATS approach.

Esophageal duplication cyst: an unusual cause of respiratory distress in infants.

Esophageal duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies. These should be recognized as a cause of respiratory distress in infants and are usually associated with feeding difficulties. We report 2 such cases of esophageal duplication cyst in infants, causing acute respiratory distress. Excision was curative.

Benign esophageal tumors: introduction, incidence, classification, and clinical features.

Benign esophageal tumors comprise a diverse group of disorders that are rare in relation to malignant tumors or other benign conditions. The current article summarizes the literature with regard to the incidence and prevalence of benign tumors of the esophagus and discusses the various methods used to categorize these conditions. Summaries of important clinical features are provided for leiomyomas, esophageal cysts, fibrovascular polyps, papillomas, granular cell tumors and others.
