[Way of drying the skin and the renewal of skin surface activity].

Abstract

The author tried to evaluate the impact of the way of drying the skin upon the renewal of its surface acidity, using a linen towel, paper towel, cellucotton and a stream of dry air. 20 persons were evaluated. Prior to the study, 1% solution of "BHP" soap had been put on their skin. PH was measured at the skin surface by a pH-meter (produced by "Radelkis") using a combined glass and calomel electrode. This method of skin drying was considered the best one, after which the average time of pH value renewal on the skin surface was the shortest, which amounted to the recovery of pH to the initial value. The way of drying the skin was found to have a significant impact on the time of pH renewal. The results were indicative of advisability of the use of linen towels.

[Effect of soap and detergents on the restitution of acidity and lipids of the skin surface].

A comparative evaluation of the effects of soaps and detergents on pH behaviour and lipids level on the skin surface and duration of their restitution was carried out. The studies were conducted in two groups. The first group of 32 persons used 1% solution of "BHP" soap, whereas the other one, composed of 31 persons, 0,5% solution of detergentpowder "POLLENA". PH measurements of skin were performed using pH--meter of Radelkis firm with a combined glass and calomel electrode. Lipids on the skin surface were determined by the Hodgson--Jones and Wheatly's gravimetric method. The evaluation of soap and detergent's effects on skin was based on the mean output and direct pH values of the skin surface, accidental and residual level of lipids, and comparison of the duration of these parameters restitution. The soap was found to alkalyse stronger than the detergent, and duration of pH restitution is longer after using the soap, whereas the detergent degreases the skin more intensively than the soap. Also restitution of lipid's jacket is slower after using the detergent.

Identification of type C viruses by electron microscopy.

The cores of a small proportion of the particles in purified preparations of type C viruses are characterized by two concentric shells that have a "double-ring" appearance in specimens prepared for electron microscopy by negative staining or thin sectioning techniques. This distinctive feature allows such particles to be recognized as viral in impure preparations. Detectability of double-ring particles is considerably enhanced by treating the specimens with a non-ionic detergent before fixation and negative staining. The limit of detectablity of type C virus (identified by the double-ring feature) in the presence of a large excess of nonviral particulates of similar size and density was assessed.
