High frequency current effects during transurethral resection.

Abstract

Transurethral resection has been simulated electrically to detect the current pathways and locations of heat production inside the patient. Different electrical behavior was noted with instruments using electrically insulated or metal sheaths. Conductive lubricating jelly should be used with the metal sheath and non-conducting jelly should be used with the insulated sheath.

Electric current generated by ultrasonically induced Lorentz force in biological media.

The ions of solutions exposed to the propagation of ultrasound in the presence of a magnetic field experience Lorentz force. Their movement gives rise to a local electric current density, which is proportional to the electric conductivity of the medium. In vitro assessment of this current is performed using simple models of biological media. A constant magnetic field of 0.35 T and 500 kHz pulsed ultrasound are used. The sensing electrodes are exposed to neither the pressure wave nor the magnetic field, thus ensuring that the signal is not due to any undesirable electrode effect. The experimental results confirm that the current is proportional to the electrical conductivity of the medium. The changes in the measured current against the width of the measurement chamber show that the electrodes only collect a fraction of the current created within the medium. The magnitude of the measured current is 50nA in a saline solution of 0.5 S/m conductivity. The technique enabled the determination of the conductivity of a porcine blood sample against haematocrit. It is concluded that this type of measurement has the potential to allow the electrical conductivity of a medium to be determined using ultrasound.

Consecutive geoelectric measurements reveal the downward movement of an oxidation zone.

An investigation program for monitoring pyrite oxidation on a conveyer bridge dump used geoelectric measurement for monitoring the progress of pyrite oxidation within the dump. The results of the geoelectric measurement show that low soil-pH and high pore water conductivity correlate with low soil resistivity values. The soil resistivity values are dominated by high pore water conductivity. The influence of changes in water saturation on resistivity was comparably low. An increase in pyrite oxidation was observed in areas with high porosity due to low dump density. Consecutive geoelectric measurements revealed locally differentiated downward movement of an oxidation zone caused by dump heterogeneity.

Magnetoneurography of evoked compound action currents in human cervical nerve roots.

OBJECTIVE: A measurement protocol for magnetoneurography (MNG) is established which allows the non-invasive localization and tracing of evoked compound action currents propagating along cervical nerve roots in man. METHODS: Inside a magnetically shielded room either both median or both ulnar nerves of healthy subjects were conventionally electrostimulated in alternation. Evoked magnetic responses were recorded using a multichannel SQUID-detector with a planar measuring area centered over the neck. Simultaneously, electric surface potentials were recorded using cervical bipolar electrode montages. RESULTS: Upon median (ulnar) nerve stimulation somatosensory evoked magnetic fields up to 20 fT (10 fT) amplitude were detected propagating over the cervical transforaminal root entry zone, with corresponding electrical surface potentials of 1.5 microV (0.5 microV). Furthermore, the signal-to-noise ratio of the spatiotemporal magnetic field mappings in median nerve stimulation experiments allowed dipolar source reconstructions and tracing of the propagation of the compound action currents along nerve root fibers. CONCLUSION: Magnetoneurography allows tracing of the propagation of evoked compound action currents along cervical roots in healthy subjects with millisecond temporal and high spatial resolution. Thus, MNG offers a sensitivity appropriate to serve as a clinical diagnostic tool for localizing focal neuropathies of cervical nerve roots.
