Evaluation and design of a small portable EMG amplifier with potential RMS output.

The present study attempted to design and evaluate a small portable electromyogram (EMG) amplifier that can output enhanced EMG and its root mean square (RMS) value. The production and design were of a laboratory scale without any special or high cost circuit construction. The designed amplifier was actually innovated according to the actual working conditions based on physiological anthropology. The present amplifier was compared with commercially available products and proved to be of practical use. The device was installed with a sufficiently small body depicting 8-channel variable gain AC amplifier and variable time-window RMS-to-DC converter. The prototype was battery-driven and well-shielded to minimize external noise interference.

Does classroom amplification aid comprehension?

Many classrooms are noisy and this interferes with listening and teaching. FM soundfield (FM) amplification systems have been developed which provide a uniform soundfield throughout the classroom and increase the speech-signal:noise ratio. The effect on comprehension of such a system was investigated. Forty-nine pupils (comprising the two top classes of a mainstream primary school) participated in this study, with a mean age of 9.92 years (range 8.58-11.42 years). The Neale Analysis of Reading Ability (Neale, 1988a, b) was modified and administered as a spoken comprehension test. Tests of nonverbal intelligence, auditory memory and a questionnaire were given. The passages spoken though the FM amplification system were understood better than the comparable unamplified passages. Auditory memory, sex and non-verbal intelligence had no effect on improved comprehension. FM amplification significantly improved comprehension and could be considered for use in other schools.

Fast scan and echo planar MR imaging technology.

The development of imaging technology for acquiring ever-faster images has been an ongoing activity since the early years of MR imaging development. This article gives the reader a sense of the range of technical challenges faced by the developers of faster imaging hardware and some of their solutions. Before reviewing the technical issues, however, the authors briefly discuss the marketplace realities that have led to technology decisions and, to a certain extent, the prolonged pace of development of the hardware.
