The intention of this article is to introduce a complement to the natural science paradigm by giving medicine, especially general practice, a dimension of understanding inspired by existential philosophy. The presuppositions of natural science regarding human nature dividing body and soul, subject and object, are discussed and found insufficient for an understanding of what it means to be human. Case studies illustrate that for the patient, the meaning of symptom in existential terms has vast practical consequences for deciding treatment.
