Evaluating runners' injuries.

Abstract

Running is a simple and convenient form of exercise but is associated with a high risk of injury to the lower limbs and feet. Attention to the training programme, the footwear and anatomy will assist the management and prevention of many injuries. Overtraining is a special problem and the physician should be alert for its physical markers.

Muscle strains in soccer: a five-year survey of an Italian major league team.

We analyzed muscle injuries collected from an Italian major-league soccer team during the period 1995-2000. We considered all the muscle accidents that had required a player to stand down for three or more days. Among the overall injuries, muscle accidents were the most frequent, representing 30% (103 cases), followed by contusions (28%), sprains (17%) and tendinopathies (9%). There was one recurrence involving the hamstring. Lack of training was one of the causes of such injuries; in fact the training/match ratio of those seasons (3.6 to 1) show that there was little time for training compared to the number of matches.

[Recreational diving accidents in Sweden].

Even if recreational diving is gradually becoming safer, the 2-6 fatalities each year is the most serious problem in recreational diving. Human factors are behind 75% of the fatalities and medical problems seldom cause fatalities. On average 40 recreational divers are treated with recompression each year. Signs and symptoms are in general mild and only few sequelas are seen. The number of traumas to ear/balance organs, sinuses, lungs etc are difficult to estimate but these are most likely not a large part of all patients in the health care. It is currently difficult to estimate the risks in recreational diving since there is no exact information on the number of dives that are performed each year.
