[Dyssegmental dwarfism. A new case].

Abstract

In a 3 1/2 month old child with micromelic dwarfism, a case of dyssegmental dwarfism is reported. This affection is characterized, on one hand, by a shortening and a squat aspect of long bones with diaphyseal curve, and on the other hand, by a trouble of vertebral segmentation associated to a variability in the size of vertebral bodies. The differential diagnosis appears adequate to differentiate the dyssegmental dwarfism from other types of neonatal chondrodysplasia, in particular from Kniest syndrome and micrognathia dwarfism.

Five familial cases of opsismodysplasia substantiate the hypothesis of autosomal recessive inheritance.

We describe a family with two marriages of first cousins and a total of five children with opsismodysplasia. The diagnosis was based on clinical, radiological, and immunhistochemical findings. Helpful to the diagnosis was the testing with type I collagen antibodies, showing abnormally high levels in the hypertrophic area of growth cartilage. This observation supports the hypothesis of autosomal recessive transmission of opsismodysplasia.

Multinuclear solid-state three-dimensional MRI of bone and synthetic calcium phosphates.

Multinuclear three-dimensional solid-state MRI of bone, tooth, and synthetic calcium phosphates is demonstrated in vitro and in vivo with a projection reconstruction technique based on acquisition of free induction decays in the presence of fixed amplitude magnetic field gradients. Phosphorus-31 solid-state MRI provides direct images of the calcium phosphate constituents of bone substance and is a quantitative measurement of the true volumetric bone mineral density of the bone. Proton solid-state MRI shows the density of bone matrix including its organic constituents, which consist principally of collagen. These solid-state MRI methods promise to yield a biological picture of bone richer in information concerning the bone composition and short range-crystalline order than the fluid-state images provided by conventional proton MRI or the density images produced by radiologic imaging techniques. Three-dimensional solid-state projection reconstruction MRI should be readily adaptable to both human clinical use and nonmedical applications for a variety of solids in materials science.

A chemical and physicochemical study of an Egyptian mummy 'Iset Iri Hetes' from the Ptolemaic period III-I B.C.

Chemical and physicochemical examinations of the fragments of an Egyptian mummy dated between the 3rd and 1st century B.C. were performed. The chemical examinations indicated the presence of resin in the skull and in the fragments of bandages wrapped around the mummy. An analysis of the infrared spectra of the fragments indicated a type of resin originating from the Copal group. Physicochemical investigations showed that main chemical elements such as Ca, Mg, Na, K, P and trace chemical elements such as Fe, Zn, Cu, and Pb occurred in bone fragments in proportions typical for people living today. In tooth fragments, values were similar to normal except for K, P, and Zn, which were lower, and Pb, which was absent. In the fingernails, most elements were found in much higher concentrations except for Cu and Pb, which were lower. The results of the study in terms of their implications on mummification are discussed.
