Postmortem skeletal lesions.

Postmortem bone alterations are very frequent and can raise the issue of their nature (antemortem, perimortem or postmortem defects). The aim of this work is to study various aspects of defects which were not assessed as perimortem trauma, from a series of 50 defects examined, resulting from 24 forensic cases. This study emphasizes the variability of size, shape and number of postmortem defects. Usually the diagnosis of antemortem defects is helped by a careful examination of some characteristics as the edges of the defects, the areas of discoloration of the edges and of the whole bone. Elsewhere it appears very difficult to know the true nature (antemortem, postmortem, or perimortem alterations) of the bone.

[Selenoproteins in bone, gastrointestinal tract and thyroid gland of the human].

BASIS: Selenium is an essential trace element, which is incorporated as selenocysteine (secys) into specific proteins in a regulated fashion. In the presence of a hairpin loop structure within the 3' untranslated region of the mRNA the opal stop codon UGA is coding for selenocysteine. Selenoprotein functions are dependent on secys incorporation. Members of the family of deiodinases as well as the family of glutathione peroxidases, selenoprotein P and thioredoxin reductase are selenoproteins. DISCUSSION: Bone, the intestine and the thyroid rely on antioxidant systems against potential cell and DNA damage through endogenous and environmental peroxides and reactive oxygen species (ROS) potentially promoting inflammation and tumorigenesis. Optimized cell defense through antioxidant selenoproteins requires optimal selenium supplementation of the organism. We have analyzed the expression of selenoproteins in these tissues, thus providing molecular tools to further elucidate optimal selenium supply on a cellular level. CONCLUSION: Clinical intervention studies that focus on the development of disease must confirm the relevance of optimized selenium supply for the pathogenesis, prevention and therapy of metabolic bone disease as well as chronic (autoimmune) inflammation and tumorigenesis in the thyroid and intestine.

Dermatoglyphics in patients with Cenani-Lenz type syndactyly: studies in a new case.

We describe an additional case of Cenani-Lenz syndactylism in a 4 1/2-year-old boy from a consanguineous Turkish family. The digital anomalies consisted partly of synostosis and partly of malformations of the phalanges. Although there was no radio-ulnar synostosis or abnormality of the bones of the feet, the findings are comparable to those described in the Cenani-Lenz type of syndactyly. We analysed the dermatoglyphics of our patient and compared them with those previously reported. We also investigated the relationship between the bony malformations and the dermatoglyphic patterns in our patient and in the literature.
