Practical denture disinfection.

Abstract

Dental laboratory personel are at risk of contracting infections from dental prostheses that have not been properly disinfected. A 4% chlorhexidine scrub for 15 seconds followed by a 3-minute contact time with a chlorine dioxide solution was effective in disinfecting contaminated dentures. Chair-side disinfection of dental prostheses before laboratory procedures is the key to keeping microbial contamination out of the dental laboratory.

Comparison of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, MTAD, and 2% chlorhexidine in the rapid disinfection of polycaprolactone-based root canal filling material.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, MTAD, and 2% chlorhexidine in the rapid disinfection of Resilon pellets. Resilon pellets were randomly selected, contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis, and disinfected with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, MTAD, or 2% chlorhexidine. Positive and negative controls were used. All samples were air dried, washed in sterile water, placed in centrifuge tubes containing BHI broth, and incubated at 37 degrees C for up to 7 days. Broths were visually checked for turbidity and scored for growth. Samples from each experimental and control group were randomly chosen, plated, incubated at 37 degrees C, and checked visually for growth. If growth occurred, a gram stain was performed to identify bacterial species. Results indicate that 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, MTAD, and 2% chlorhexidine were all effective in the rapid disinfection of Resilon and gutta-percha pellets, and a 1-minute immersion was sufficient to disinfect.

Combined effects of staining substances on resin composites before and after surface sealant application.

The objective was to measure the combined effect of mucin, chlorhexidine and tea solution on the staining of four dental resin composites, and to determine the effect of surface sealant on staining. One side of cured resin composite specimens of 10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness were polished with 600-grit silicon carbide paper. One group of specimens (n = 5) was treated with a surface sealant [BisCover, Bisco, USA; SS (surface sealant) group], and the other group was not (NO group; control). Specimens were sequentially immersed in the following substances: Mucin in phosphate buffered saline (PBS); chlorhexidine; tea solution; and ultrasonic cleaning and then immersion in PBS. Color was measured on a reflection spectrophotometer. Changes in color (DeltaE (*) (ab)) and color parameters, such as hue, chroma and value, after immersion in tea solution and subsequent cleaning were analyzed by repeated measures, analysis of variance at the 0.05 level of significance. The range of DeltaE (*) (ab) values after immersion in tea solution was 11.4-21.1 for NO group and 10.5-19.6 for SS group, and that after cleaning was 2.4-10.0 for NO group and 2.7-8.3 for SS group. After staining, CIE L (*) value (lightness) decreased, and CIE a (*) and b (*) values increased. Color changes of resin composites were not acceptable after sequential immersion treatment (DeltaE (*) ( ab ) > 3.3). The changes in color and color parameters of sealant applied group were not significantly different from those of control group except for a few combinations of color parameters and resin composites.

Effects of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine solutions on Resilon (synthetic polymer based root canal filling material) cones: an atomic force microscopy study.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of 2% chlorhexidine and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite on the surface properties of Resilon cones with the atomic force microscopy. The Resilon cones were immersed in disinfecting agents (5.25% sodium hypochlorite and 2% chlorhexidine) at 1 and 5 min time intervals. Atomic force microscopy was used to evaluate topographical deviations of Resilon cones. Root mean square (RMS) parameters for topographic amplitudes were calculated. The cones exhibited statistically significant low RMS values at 5-min immersion in sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine groups compared to the all other groups (p < 0.05). One-minute immersion did not show any significant deterioration on the Resilon surface (p > 0.05). In conclusion, sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine solutions used for disinfection significantly decreased (p < 0.05) the RMS values of Resilon cones at 5-min applications.
