Ceramic head failure.

Abstract

A case of abrupt failure of the ceramic head component of a total hip arthroplasty is reported. The prosthesis had been inserted more than 5 years previously and had functioned well until its abrupt failure. At revision, the metal femoral and acetabular components were intact and well fixed. The broken ceramic head was replaced with a metal component, and the polyethylene liner replaced with a new one.

New piezoelectric transducers for therapeutic ultrasound.

Therapeutic ultrasound (US) has been of increasing interest during the past few years. However, the development of this technique depends on the availability of high-performance transducers. These transducers have to be optimised for focusing and steering high-power ultrasonic energy within the target volume. Recently developed high-power 1-3 piezocomposite materials bring to therapeutic US the exceptional electroacoustical properties of piezocomposite technology: these are high efficiency, large bandwidth, predictable beam pattern, more flexibility in terms of shaping and definition of sampling in annular arrays, linear arrays or matrix arrays. The construction and evaluation of several prototypes illustrates the benefit of this new approach that opens the way to further progress in therapeutic US.

Influence of P2O5 on crystallinity of apatite formed in vitro on surface of bioactive glasses.

Two sol-gel glasses with 80 mol % SiO2 were prepared in the system SiO2-CaO-P2O5; the first one had 3 mol% P2O5 in its composition, and the second one was P2O5 free. The in vitro behavior of glasses was studied by soaking them in simulated body fluid for 7 days at 37 degrees C. After the in vitro test, the study by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, electron diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy showed an apatite-like layer had formed on the surface of both glasses. However, for identical soaking time, the apatite crystals formed on the surface of the glass containing P2O5 in the composition were larger. Therefore, the presence of P2O5 in the sol-gel glass composition promotes the crystal growth of the apatite.

Effect of heat treatment on microcrack healing behavior of a machinable dental ceramic.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of annealing in air on the crack healing behavior of a machinable dental ceramic (Vita Mark II). The glass transition temperature and the softening point were determined by dilatometry. Polished Vita Mark II blocks (n = 12) were indented with a Vickers indenter under a 9.8 N load. Optical micrographs were taken immediately after indentation, and the crack lengths were measured. The specimens were annealed at 900 degrees C for either 30 min, 1 h, or 2 h. One group was indented and heat treated at 400 degrees C for 2 h as control. The ratio of crack length after annealing to crack length before annealing treatment was calculated for each indentation. Scanning electron microscopy was performed before and after annealing at 900 degrees C for 1 h. Scanning electron microscopy revealed shortening and blunting of the cracks after annealing. Annealing in air at 900 degrees C for either 30 min, 1 or 2 h significantly reduced the mean crack length of an indented machinable dental ceramic compared to the control group. However, the mean biaxial flexural strength was not significantly affected by an annealing treatment.
