[Scintigraphic systems and their evaluation using computers].

Abstract

A comparative characteristics of modern scintillation chambers manufactured by different firms is given. Basic parameters of the chambers and the methods of their appraisal effected by using computer technique are considered and results obtained by comparing major parameters of three chamber models ("Fo-Gamma III HP", "Fo-Gamma LFOV" and "Daina-2C") through experimental procedures by following a chosen method are presented. The authors come to the conclusion that the use of computer technique tends to greatly facilitate the procedure of the chambers' control and increases the significance and reliability of the scintigraphic findings.

Prognostic factor of telecobalt therapy for early glottic carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Local control rates of T1 and T2 glottic carcinoma treated with radiation alone were reported as 80-91% and 63-76%, respectively. The authors investigated the factors that affect the local control rate for early glottic carcinoma. METHODS: From 1967 through 1982, 330 patients with early glottic carcinoma (T1: 274 patients; T2: 56) were treated with telecobalt therapy at the Department of Radiology, Osaka University Hospital, Osaka, Japan. RESULTS: Five-year actuarial survival rates of patients with T1 and T2 were 79% and 80%, respectively. Five-year local disease control rates of patients with T1 and T2 disease were 81% and 67%, respectively. In 243 of 254 patients treated with 2 Gy a day, tumor response could be evaluated at the dose level of 40 Gy. For tumors treated with a daily dose of 2 Gy, local control rates of 153 tumors that disappeared at 40 Gy and 90 tumors that persisted at 40 Gy were 83% and 62%, respectively (P < 0.001). Field size and daily fraction size did not affect the local control rate. CONCLUSION: Evaluation of tumor response at 40 Gy was an important indicator of local disease control for early glottic cancers treated with 2 Gy a day.

Bound vitamin B12 absorption in patients with low serum B12 levels.

In many patients with low serum levels of vitamin B12, the absorption of the free vitamin has been normal. The present study, using a total body counter 57CoB12 absorption method that clearly separated those with intrinsic factor deficiency from controls, found that of 94 patients with low B12 levels and intact stomachs in whom the absorption of free and bound B12 was determined, 44 (47%) had normal absorption of both. However, 20 of the 94 (21%) with normal absorption of free B12 had low absorption of bound B12. The remainder (32%) had low absorption of both free and bound B12. All patients with high serum gastrin levels had low bound B12 absorption, but so did 21% of those patients with normal serum gastrin levels.

Inverse dose-rate effect of DNA breaks and inactivation of transforming activity induced by tritiated water and 60Co gamma-rays.

When an aqueous solution of plasmid DNA at a constant low concentration of 5 micrograms/cm3 was irradiated with 60Co gamma-rays, D37 dose of single-strand breaks was decreased from 18 Gy at a dose-rate of 6.77 Gy/h of acute irradiation to 2.3 Gy at a dose-rate of 0.00212 Gy/h. Or G value was increased from 0.0010 to 0.0081. Similar dose-rate dependency of D37 dose and G value were also found when the plasmid DNA solution was treated with various concentrations of tritiated water at various dose-rates, ranging from 5.13 Gy/h to 0.000118 Gy/h. RBE of tritium beta-rays for single-strand breaks was ranged from 0.3 to 0.5 in a wide range of dose-rates. When the DNA solution was saturated with argon to remove oxygen, the dose-rate dependency of gamma-rays was abolished and that of tritium beta-rays was significantly suppressed. When the DNA solution in air was kept at 4 degrees C for 50 h or 25 days after acute irradiation, the G value of DNA breaks was the same as that kept at -20 degrees C for the same period, but much lower than that of the solution irradiated for the same period at a lower dose-rate to give the same total doses. This shows that the inverse dose-rate effect could not be induced from the different exposure periods but from continuous irradiation of different dose-rates. The inverse dose-rate effect for inactivation of transforming activity of DNA irradiated with tritiated water was also observed in the range from 0.0588 Gy/h to 0.00118 Gy/h.
