Developing outcome assessment methods.

Abstract

Describing the development of an outcome assessment method for accreditation, the authors discuss development of criterion definitions and the evaluation of results from a pilot study using student portfolios. The subsequent design of an outcome assessment tool to provide concrete, objective data, the evolution of the evaluation process using this tool, and how the outcome data are currently used for curriculum evaluation are discussed.

Issues concerning the development of a competency-based assessment system for dentistry.

The issue of standards of competence and assessment is central to professions. For the dental profession there have been suggestions that a change from overall competence to specific fields of competence would be a more suitable mechanism to assess whether an individual was competent. This paper examines the implications of such proposed changes and highlights several key issues, answers to which need to be provided prior to adopting new proposals. Failure to do so may well provide additional problems without addressing shortcomings in the present system.

Re-accreditation, re-certification and the postgraduate database.

A consultation paper from the GDC has suggested that there will be a re-accreditation and re-certification procedure for dental practitioners which will require evidence of continuing postgraduate education. There is debate as to how that information should be held and who should hold it.
