Neonatal diaphragmatic dysfunction.

Abstract

Several unusual diaphragmatic problems in the neonate are presented and a new potential complication of the negative pressure respirator is illustrated. The association of bilateral diaphragmatic eventrations with chromosome anomalies is emphasized. In our experience the appearance of the chest on frontal and lateral views is usually so characteristic that no further evaluation is required. The relationship between several neuromuscular disorders and diaphragmatic dysfunction is discussed. A case of congenital myotonic dystrophy with unilateral eventration is illustrated.

Acrocentric interconnections and NOR variants in human lymphocytes.

Acrocentric interconnections and NOR (nucleolus organizer region) variants are frequently observed in silver-stained metaphase preparations from lymphocytes of phenotypically normal individuals. The types of interconnections and of NOR variants are outlined. It is speculated that the satellite acrocentrics (both normal and variant) are the consequence of breakage and recoiling of these interconnections. Awareness of these two features of the human genome may facilitate understanding of the NOR/nucleolus interaction(s) in such important processes as nucleolus formation and in development and/or diagnosis of disease states (i.e., malignancy).

Translocation C:D involving chromosomes 11 and 14.

A translocation of material from chromosome 11 to chromosome 14 was identified in a 7-month-old male with microcephaly and developmental delay. The break-points appear to be on the long arm of chromosome 11, close to the centromere, and on the short arm of the 14.

Expression of esterase D and other gene markers in trisomy 13.

A gene dosage effect was observed for esterase D in a patient with trisomy 13. Isoelectric focusing of hemoglobin from the same patient showed three unidentified bands. A gene dosage effect for several other enzymes was not observed in two other patients with trisomy 13.
