[Computerized occlusal verification in denture frames].

Abstract

Partial removable prosthesis must foresee masticatory force distribution on all dental arch, with occlusal contacts uniformly distributed on natural and artificial teeth. These dental contacts must have the same intensity and they must happen in the same time, rispetting the gnathology laws. In this work it is investigated the possible utilization in partial removable prosthesis of T-Scan.

Mastication and swallowing: an overview.

The cycles of jaw and tongue movement during feeding produce not only the breakage of food but its intra-oral transport; which activity predominates depends upon the physical characteristics of the food. When hard food is eaten and tooth-food-tooth contact is made during jaw closure, the velocity of closing is suddenly reduced, producing two clearly different phases of closure; during the second phase the activity of the jaw closing muscles is much increased. Conversely, in cycles with a mainly transport function (eating soft food), the antero-posterior movements of the tongue are much greater; this alters the time and rate at which the jaw opens. The pattern of jaw movement during closing and during opening consequently varies with food consistency. The evidence suggests that sensory input controls the form of the cyclical tongue and jaw movements. However the basic plan of movement is produced by the activity of a brainstem pattern generator which receives input from both cerebro-cortical and peripheral sources. The swallow that occurs in normal feeding consists of the equivalent of the classical second stage of swallowing inserted into the occlusal or initial jaw opening phase of an otherwise standard cycle. Although leakage of traces of food or saliva into the vallecula appears to be a peripheral sensory input of major importance in inducing such a swallow, the execution of the swallow is due to a pattern generator in the brainstem.

The structure and functions of the dentogingival junction and periodontal ligament.

The dentogingival junction and periodontal ligament perform unique functions. The former makes a seal where a tooth punctures the integument; the latter, nominally a ligament, cushions the tooth during mastication, while sheltering the delicate cells which remodel the bony socket. A special feature of both tissues is the rapid turnover of their major components.

Perception of forces exerted by jaw and thumb.

By comparing the results of force matching between the jaw and the thumbs, whether subjects have any knowledge about the magnitude of exerted forces irrespective of the motor system was studied. Subjects were asked to match isometric forces of their own choice exerted by flexion of one of the thumbs with the jaw, and the other way around. The results were compared with control experiments in which subjects matched forces exerted by flexion of one of the thumbs with the other thumb and vice versa. None of the subjects was able to match correctly in all experimental conditions. All subjects displayed inconsistent matching behaviour, showing a mixture of correct matching and mismatching. This holds both for absolute matches (in N), and for matches relative to the maximal forces. The results show that knowledge about the magnitude of exerted forces is different for the jaw and the thumbs. Sensations about isometric forces exerted by the jaw or the thumbs are different within each subject and from subject to subject.
